Alright, let's talk about SpongeBob - The Cosmic Shake. If you've been cruising the Google Play Store or App Store looking for a solid 3D platformer, this is one you've probably seen. Developed by HandyGames and published by THQ Nordic, it's a direct follow-up to the excellent SpongeBob: Battle for Bikini Bottom – Rehydrated. But unlike that title, which was a remaster of a classic from the early 2000s, this is an entirely new adventure. The game first launched in January 2023 on pretty much everything: PC via Steam, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and later made its way to Android and iOS. On mobile, it's a premium download, meaning you pay upfront to download and install the app. As of now, it has over 100,000 installs on Google Play, which isn't huge compared to some free-to-play titles, but it's respectable for a paid port. There are no in-app purchases or obnoxious ads interrupting your gameplay, which is a huge relief. It's a one-and-done purchase, usually costing around $7.99 to $9.99 depending on your region. That said, you're getting a full console-quality platformer for your phone, which is pretty rare these days.
So, how does it actually play? Well, if you've ever played any 3D platformer like Super Mario Odyssey or Crash Bandicoot 4, you'll feel right at home, but with that signature SpongeBob silliness. You control SpongeBob as he travels through different "Wishworlds" created by his best friend Patrick after a cosmic mishap. Each world has its own unique theme—like a Wild West town or a pirate-infested medieval castle—and you'll be collecting items, stomping on enemies, and solving light puzzles. The best part for me is the movement. The game features a double jump, a glide with SpongeBob's balloon pants, a spinning attack, and even a karate kick. It feels smooth and responsive on Android if you use a controller, though the touch controls are decent enough for short sessions. My favorite part? Honestly, it's the sheer variety. One minute you're surfing on jellyfish, the next you're sliding down rails like it's a Ratchet & Clank game. The humor is spot-on too, with voice acting from the original cast. Playing this on my phone during a commute feels surreal because it doesn't feel like a cheap mobile port; it feels like I'm playing a proper console game. The level design is creative enough that I never felt bored, which is rare for a licensed android game.
Compared to other 3D platformers on mobile, this one stands out. You've got games like Lara Croft GO or Oddmar which are great, but they're more puzzle-based or side-scrolling. SpongeBob - The Cosmic Shake is a full 3D platformer with camera control, exploration, and collectibles. It's way closer to something like Super Mario Run but actually fully 3D. Another similar game I've tried is Crash Bandicoot: On the Run!, but that's a mobile-only endless runner, not a true platformer. This game respects your time—you unlock new abilities and revisit old levels with them, like a proper Metroidvania-lite structure. Plus, it's family-friendly without being dumbed down. If you're a fan of the show or just miss the golden era of 3D platformers, this is a no-brainer. Just be warned, it's a bit demanding on older phones. On my mid-range Android device, I had to lower the graphics to get a steady 30fps. But if you have a recent flagship, it runs like a dream. Honestly, I'd take this over most free mobile apps because you're not getting nickel-and-dimed every five minutes.
features
- 🔄 Full Console Port, No Cut Corners: Unlike many mobile ports that strip out content or downgrade visuals heavily, this is the complete The Cosmic Shake experience. You get every level, every cutscene, and full voice acting. Compare that to Minecraft: Pocket Edition which launched missing tons of features, or Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas on mobile which had glitchy controls. This game feels like a proper AAA port, not a cash-grab.
- 🎮 Controller Support and Touch Options: You can play this with a Bluetooth controller (like an Xbox or PlayStation pad) which makes the platforming feel excellent. But if you don't have one, the on-screen controls are surprisingly customizable. You can adjust button size and layout, which is way better than Fortnite on mobile where you're stuck with default mapping. This is a huge plus for serious players who want precision jumps.
- 📦 No Microtransactions or Ads: The game costs money upfront, but that's it. You're not pestered to buy gems, skins, or skip timers. This is a rare breed on mobile. Compare it to LEGO Star Wars: TCS which has ads if you don't pay, or Crash Bandicoot: On the Run! which is built around grinding for resources. This game respects your wallet and your time.
pros
- 🟢 Fantastic Level Variety: Each of the seven Wishworlds feels totally different. One level you're in a medieval castle fighting knights, the next you're in a Halloween-themed town. It never gets stale, unlike Super Mario Run which reuses the same assets over and over. The creativity here is top-tier for a mobile game.
- 🎙️ Original Voice Cast: Hearing Tom Kenny and the rest of the cast deliver new lines is a treat. It adds so much personality that other platformers like Oddworld: New 'n' Tasty lack. The jokes land well, and it keeps you smiling even when you die from a cheap pit.
- 🧩 Collectibles That Matter: You're collecting "Socks" and "Shiny Objects" to unlock costumes for SpongeBob. Some costumes even change his abilities slightly. This reminds me of Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy gems, where collecting everything actually gives you a reward. It gives you a reason to replay levels without feeling like busywork.
cons
- 🚫 Touch Controls Can Be Frustrating: The game was clearly designed for a controller. On touchscreen, the camera control is a bit clunky, and precise jumps (especially the glide+kick combo) can be a pain. Crash Bandicoot: On the Run! had simpler controls because it was auto-run, so this game feels harder to handle on mobile without a pad.
- 📱 Performance Issues on Older Devices: Even on a decent mid-range phone, I experienced frame drops in busy areas. The game recommends a Snapdragon 855 or better, which leaves out a lot of budget users. Compare that to LEGO Star Wars: TCS which runs buttery smooth on almost anything. If you don't have a powerful phone, this might be a slog.
- 🪫 Limited Replay Value: Once you 100% the game (which takes about 10-15 hours), there isn't much reason to come back. There are no leaderboards, no New Game+ mode, and no online multiplayer. Games like Minecraft or Roblox keep you hooked forever, but this is a one-and-done experience. For the price, though, that's pretty standard for a platformer.
