Gem Stack is a pretty straightforward puzzle game that's been taking up way too much of my phone's battery lately. It's one of those deceptively simple casual games where you just stack falling gems, trying to match three of the same color to clear them out. The game is available on Android via the Google Play Store, and I'm pretty sure you can grab it on the App Store for iOS as well. It's a pure mobile game through and through—no fancy PC version on Steam or anything like that, and you won't find it on Xbox or Switch. Rollic Games first launched this one recently, and honestly, it's already racked up over 5 million installs on Google Play, which is no joke. The best part? It's completely free to download and play. But like most mobile games these days, there are in-app purchases. You can buy things like extra lives, boosters, or remove ads. From what I've seen, these purchases range from about $0.99 for a small pack of gems up to maybe $9.99 for a bigger bundle. Oh, and yeah, there are in-app ads. You'll get those standard 30-second video ads every few rounds, but you can watch them voluntarily to get rewards like extra gems or power-ups.When you first install the app and start playing, it's pretty easy to get the hang of. You just tap on the screen to drop the gem into the stack, and if you match three or more of the same color, they vanish. What makes this game stand out for me is the pacing. It's fast but not frantic. Each round lasts maybe a minute or two, so it's perfect for those quick breaks. The best part, though, has to be the combo system. When you pull off a chain reaction—like matching a bunch of gems and causing more to fall and match again—the sound effects and visual feedback are really satisfying. My favorite part of playing this game is when you're down to your last slot and you manage to clear a whole row, buying yourself more time. There's this tension that builds up, and when you succeed, it feels great. I also like that you can keep playing without having to log in or deal with any complicated menus. Just tap and go.If you've played games like Candy Crush or Tetris, you'll find Gem Stack familiar but refreshing. Unlike Candy Crush, which relies heavily on levels and objectives, Gem Stack is more about endless stacking and survival. It feels closer to Tetris in that sense, but the matching mechanic is simpler and more casual. What I really appreciate compared to those other games is that Gem Stack doesn't try to shove a thousand different power-ups or confusing mechanics in your face. It's just pure, focused gameplay. You don't need to worry about board clearing or moving obstacles—just match colors and keep the stack from reaching the top. Another reason I recommend this over something like Candy Crush is that there's no energy system that forces you to wait or pay to keep playing. You can just keep going until you mess up. That's rare these days. The game respects your time, and as someone who's played tons of mobile puzzle games, that matters a lot to me.
features
- Simple Tap Controls 🎮: You just tap anywhere on the screen to drop the gem. There's no swiping, no dragging, no complicated gestures. This makes it super easy to pick up and play, even compared to something like Candy Crush where you need to swipe to match.
- Endless Survival Mode ⏳: Unlike puzzle games that have fixed levels, Gem Stack keeps going until you mess up. This endless mode is perfect for players who just want to zone out and play without worrying about objectives or star ratings.
- No Energy System ⚡: This is a huge deal for me. Most similar games like Candy Crush or Gardenscapes force you to wait for lives or pay to keep playing. Gem Stack doesn't have that. You can play as many rounds as you want, back to back, with no waiting.
pros
- Incredibly Addictive Gameplay 🕹️: The whole "just one more round" feeling is real here. Gem Stack nails the flow state. Every time the stack gets close to the top, you think you can survive one more drop, and before you know it, you've been playing for an hour. Games like Tetris have that same hook, but Gem Stack is easier to pick up quickly.
- Great for Short Sessions ⏰: Each round only lasts a minute or two, making it perfect for waiting in line or during a commercial break. I find myself opening this app way more often than something like Two Dots, which requires a bit more time commitment per level.
- Satisfying Combo System 💥: When you chain multiple matches together, the game rewards you with extra points and a really satisfying sound effect. It reminds me of the dopamine hit you get in Bejeweled when you pull off a huge chain, but here it feels more earned because you're under pressure to survive.
cons
- Lack of Variety in Game Modes 🎲: After a while, the gameplay can feel a bit repetitive since it's always the same endless stacking mechanic. Compared to games like Candy Crush, which has tons of different level objectives and special candies, Gem Stack feels pretty one-note. There's no story mode or special events to mix things up.
- Intrusive Ads Between Rounds 📺: The frequency of ads is a bit annoying. You'll get a forced video ad every few failures, which breaks the flow. While you can pay to remove them, games like Tetris allow you to watch optional ads for rewards instead of forcing them on you. It would be nice to have that choice here.
- Limited Strategic Depth 🧠: Once you understand the pattern, the game becomes more about reaction time than actual strategy. There's no way to plan ahead or manipulate the next gem's color. Games like Block Blast! give you more agency because you can rotate and place blocks strategically, which keeps the gameplay fresh longer.
