HotPads Rent Apartments is a rental listing app from HotPads, a company owned by Zillow Group. It falls into the real estate and apartment hunting category, and people mainly use it to search for homes, apartments, and rooms for rent across the United States. You can also browse for-sale listings, but renting is where it really shines. The app is free to download on both Google Play and the App Store, and you do not need to register just to look around. Most people install it when they are tired of juggling five different rental sites or when they want map-based searching that actually works. After launching it, the first impression is clean and fast. You land on a map view with listings pinned around your area, and the filters are right there without making you dig through menus. There are ads in the listing feed, and the app does support in-app purchases for some premium tools, though the exact install count is not something I can confirm.

Using it day to day is pretty straightforward. You open the app, allow location access, and immediately see rentals nearby. The map lets you draw a custom boundary, which is oddly satisfying when you want to stick to a specific neighborhood. Tapping a pin brings up photos, rent, bed and bath counts, and a contact button. You can save favorites, and the app remembers your search history. One small tip: set your filters early, because resetting them later can feel like a chore. The photo galleries load quickly, and most listings show a walk score, which helps if you care about having a grocery store within walking distance. The contact form is simple, but some landlords reply slowly, so do not expect instant answers. Overall, the flow from search to inquiry is smooth, and I rarely got lost in the interface.

After using it for a few weeks, I think HotPads works best for renters who want a no-frills, map-first experience. It is less flashy than Apartments.com and less overwhelming than Zillow's own rental section, which sometimes buries rentals under for-sale clutter. People who hate making accounts will appreciate that you can browse without signing up. On the other hand, if you need detailed neighborhood reviews or school data, you might miss those. I kept it installed because it is fast and the saved searches are handy, but if you already live in a city with a dominant local listing site, you might not need it. It is a solid backup, not a must-have for everyone.

• 📍 Map-first search lets you draw your own boundary and see listings exactly where you want them, which beats scrolling through endless list views.
• 📍 No account required for browsing, so you can check rentals instantly without handing over your email or phone number.
• 📍 Filter options cover price, beds, baths, pet policy, and even walk score, making it easier to narrow down than Zillow Rentals in some cases.
• 📍 Saved searches and favorites sync across devices, so you can start on your phone and continue on the web without losing progress.

• 💪 Faster and cleaner than Apartments.com, which often feels cluttered with ads and pop-ups.
• 💪 Better rental focus than Zillow's main app, where for-sale listings can drown out rentals.
• 💪 Map drawing tool is more flexible than Rent.com's basic map filter, giving you precise control over your search area.

• 😕 Listing quality varies, and some entries on HotPads are outdated compared to Zillow Rentals, which pulls fresher data.
• 😕 Fewer detailed neighborhood insights than Apartments.com, so you may need another app for area research.
• 😕 Ads in the feed can be distracting, and the premium tools are not clearly explained before you hit a paywall.
