Zillow is a real estate marketplace app for browsing homes for sale, rentals, and off-market properties across the United States. It falls into the property search and housing category. People mainly use it to scroll listings, estimate home values, and contact agents. You can find it on Google Play and the App Store, and it is free to download. The install count is in the tens of millions, which says a lot about how common it is. Registration is not required to browse, though you will need an account to save searches or message agents. In-app purchases exist but are mostly for premium tools and ad-free browsing. Ads do show up between listings. When you first launch it, the map loads fast and the interface feels familiar, like a cleaner version of a newspaper classifieds section. The first impression is practical rather than exciting.

After spending a few days with it, the daily rhythm becomes clear. You open the app, type a city or ZIP code, and immediately see pins on a map. Tapping a pin pulls up photos, price history, square footage, and a Zestimate, which is Zillow's own estimated market value. The onboarding is light, just a few location and notification prompts. Saving a search is easy, and the app sends alerts when new listings match your filters. One smooth moment is the 3D home tours, which load without much lag. A slightly confusing part is figuring out which listings are actually active versus pending, since the labels are small. A practical tip: use the draw tool to outline a specific neighborhood instead of relying on the default map radius. Also, always cross-check the Zestimate with a local agent, because it can be off in fast-moving markets.

After a few weeks, my honest take is that Zillow works best for casual browsing and early-stage research. People who enjoy comparing neighborhoods, checking price trends, or dreaming about a move will probably keep it installed. Anyone who needs precise, hyper-local data or is ready to make an offer might find it less useful on its own. Compared with Realtor.com, Zillow feels more consumer-friendly but sometimes less accurate on listing freshness. Redfin offers better agent transparency in some markets. I would keep Zillow around for quick checks, but I would not rely on it as my only source. The app is free and low-commitment, so uninstalling it later is no big loss, which is probably why so many people leave it on their phones for months without opening it.

• 🏠 The map-based search is the standout. You can draw a custom boundary and see listings update live inside that shape, which is faster than typing filters.
• 📊 Zestimate gives a quick price ballpark for almost every home, even ones not for sale. Zillow's database is wider than what Realtor.com shows in some rural areas.
• 🛋️ 3D home tours and floor plans are built into many listings. Redfin has something similar, but Zillow's tour player feels smoother on older phones.
• 🔔 Saved searches with instant alerts make it easy to track a specific street or school district without manually checking every day.

• ✅ Zillow has the largest listing volume in the U.S., so you see more options than on Trulia or Homes.com in most cities.
• ✅ The interface is cleaner and less cluttered than Realtor.com, especially on the map view.
• ✅ Free access to price history and tax records saves a trip to county websites.

• ❌ Listing accuracy can lag. Some homes show as active on Zillow but are already pending on Redfin.
• ❌ Zestimate is often off by 5-10% in hot markets, which can mislead first-time buyers.
• ❌ Ads appear frequently between listings, and the premium ad-free option costs extra.
