Pokémon UNITE landed on the Nintendo Switch in July 2021 and hit Android and iOS in September of the same year. If you haven't checked it out yet, it's a free-to-play 5v5 multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) that you can download straight from the Google Play Store or the App Store. Being a Pokémon-themed MOBA on mobile is already a wild concept, but it's also available on PC? Nah, actually, it's not on Steam or any PC store, but you can play it on both the Switch and mobile devices with cross-play and cross-progression, which is a huge win. The installs on Google Play alone are over 50 million, so it's definitely popular. Is it free to download and play? Yes, but there are in-app purchases for cosmetic items like Holowear (skins for your Pokémon) and a battle pass. Those purchases can range from a few dollars for small item bundles to around $40 if you're going all-in on the season pass and premium currency. There are also in-app ads, but they're mostly optional and just pop up if you want to watch them for some freebies. So, if you're on a budget, you can enjoy the core gameplay without spending a cent.
When you first boot up the app, you'll be dropped into Aeos Island, which is basically the hub for all matches. The game itself is a streamlined MOBA where you control a single Pokémon, level it up by defeating wild Pokémon in the jungle or on the lanes, and try to score points by depositing Aeos energy into the enemy's goal zones. The best part for me is definitely how fast the matches are—they last about 10 minutes, perfect for a quick session on the bus or while waiting for something. I've spent hours playing this on my Android phone, and my favorite part is using different Pokémon like Lucario or Greninja, each with unique moves and roles. What really sets it apart is how casual-friendly it is; even if you've never touched a MOBA before, the tutorial holds your hand, and the controls are simple with a virtual joystick and attack buttons. The thrill of dunking a 100-point score in the final 30 seconds is unmatched, and the Zapdos boss fight in the middle of the map can completely flip a losing game. On top of that, the game regularly updates with new Pokémon, events, and balance patches, so it never feels stale. I've been playing since launch, and the amount of content now is insane compared to what it was back then.
Now, compared to other MOBAs on mobile like Mobile Legends: Bang Bang or League of Legends: Wild Rift, Pokémon UNITE feels much more accessible. In Wild Rift, you're building complex item sets and managing last-hits for gold, but here, it's all about scoring points and evolving your Pokémon mid-match. The simplicity is a double-edged sword, but for someone like me who just wants to jump in without studying a wiki, it's perfect. I'd recommend this app over other MOBAs because it's the only one where you play as Pikachu or Charizard in a team-based arena, and the IP carries a lot of nostalgia. Plus, the matchmaking on Google Play is generally quick, and the servers have been stable for me. If you're tired of the grind in other titles, this one gives you the same strategic depth but with a lighter, more joyful atmosphere. It's not trying to be a hardcore esport; it's a fun little romp that happens to be competently designed, and that's exactly why I keep it installed on my phone.
features
- Evolving Gameplay 🐛➡️🦋: Unlike most MOBAs where you just level up your champion's abilities, your Pokémon literally evolves during the match. Starting as a basic form like Scorbunny and finally becoming Cinderace feels epic, and it directly impacts your stats and moveset. Other games like Mobile Legends just give you stat boosts; here, your character changes visually and functionally.
- Scoring Over Kills 🏀: This game prioritizes scoring points over getting eliminations. You can die a lot but still win if you efficiently dunk points. It's a fresh take compared to Wild Rift or Arena of Valor, where KDA is king. This mechanic makes every game tense right until the last second, especially when you're guarding a goal zone.
- No Items Needed 🤑: There's no need to farm gold for items in-game like in League of Legends: Wild Rift. Instead, you pick a set of "Held Items" before the match, which are permanent boosts to stats like attack or defense. This simplifies strategic depth a lot and makes the learning curve way gentler for casual Android players.
pros
- Perfect Match Length 🕐: Each game is strictly 10 minutes long, no more, no less. Compare that to a 30-minute average in League of Legends: Wild Rift or even longer in Dota 2. On mobile, this is a godsend. You can fit a full match in during a commute without stress. It respects your time and encourages quick, explosive plays.
- Incredible Roster Variety 🐱: With over 50 Pokémon to choose from, each with three unique moves and a Unite Move (ultimate), the variety is huge. Unlike Mobile Legends which has generic fantasy characters, you get to play as fan-favorites like Gengar, Blastoise, or Gardevoir. The nostalgia factor alone keeps me coming back to download the latest updates.
- F2P Friendly Grind 💰: You can unlock new Pokémon using "Aeos Coins" earned from playing, and you don't need to pay a dime. While there are cosmetics, the gameplay experience is fully accessible. Other MOBAs on Android often lock strong characters behind paywalls, but here, if you grind for a few weeks, you can pick any Pokémon you want. That's a huge plus for budget players like me.
cons
- Pay-to-Win Elements 💸: The Held Items system is heavily skewed toward paying players. You have to roll on item enhancers to upgrade your items, and it can take months to max out one set for free. Paying players get built-in stat advantages early on, which feels unfair in close matches. Wild Rift is much more skill-based in this regard since runes are free and leveling is account-based.
- Matchmaking Chaos 🎲: Especially on lower ranks, you'll get matched with teammates who run around doing nothing, feeding the enemy team, or ignoring objectives like Drednaw or Rotom. It's frustrating when you're trying to play seriously and your lane partner is AFK. Compared to Mobile Legends' stricter matchmaking, Pokémon UNITE feels like a casino sometimes.
- Lack of Strategic Depth 🧠: For hardcore MOBA players, this app feels too casual. There are no last-hitting mechanics, no ward system for vision, and the map is tiny. The simplicity is great for newcomers, but if you're coming from League of Legends: Wild Rift, you'll miss the macro-level plays like split-pushing and map control. It gets repetitive fast if you're a high-skill player.
