AnimA ARPG is a throwback dungeon crawler that wears its Diablo and Path of Exile influences on its sleeve, but honestly, it does a solid job of carving out its own identity on mobile. First launching back in 2019, this action RPG is primarily a mobile experience, available for free on both the Google Play Store and the App Store. If you're browsing on Google Play, you'll see it's crossed over 10 million installs, which is a huge feat for an indie title. It's free to download and play, but like most free games, it has in-app purchases. You can buy cosmetic skins, extra stash tabs, and some convenience items, but nothing that feels mandatory to progress. Prices range from a couple of bucks for a starter pack to around $20 for larger bundles. There are also optional in-app ads for bonus rewards, but they're not shoved in your face, which I appreciate. It's not available on Steam, Xbox, or Switch, so don't go looking for it on your PC or console. This is a pure Android and iOS game through and through, designed for touch controls from the ground up.

When you jump into AnimA ARPG, you're choosing from classic archetypes like the Sorcerer, the Bow-wielding Rogue, or the melee-focused Warrior. The gameplay loop is exactly what you'd expect from a loot-driven hack-and-slash: you enter procedurally generated dungeons, smash hordes of demons, collect gear with randomized stats, and then upgrade your character using skill trees and equipment slots. The best part? The combat feels incredibly fluid for a mobile ARPG. You can dodge-roll to evade attacks, chain skills together, and the auto-targeting is surprisingly competent. My favorite part has to be the skill system — you can unlock and swap active and passive abilities on the fly, which lets you experiment with different builds without being locked into one path. It's not as deep as Path of Exile's skill gem system, but for a mobile game, it scratches that theorycrafting itch perfectly. I've spent hours just messing around with a lightning-based mage build, and the progression feels rewarding because every piece of gear matters.

Compared to similar games on Android, AnimA ARPG stands out for its dark, atmospheric art style and its respect for classic ARPG mechanics. Games like Eternium or Titan Quest are also great, but they either feel too casual or lack the visceral combat feedback that AnimA nails. Another big competitor is Diablo Immortal, but that game is a money pit, heavily pushing microtransactions to progress. AnimA ARPG feels more like a love letter to Diablo 2, where you can grind for loot without feeling pressured to spend real money. If you're a fan of Path of Exile but want something you can play on your phone during a commute, this is the closest you'll get. The best part is that the devs are still updating it with new seasons and content, which is rare for a free indie mobile game. Honestly, if you're tired of the pay-to-win nonsense in other mobile ARPGs, just download AnimA ARPG. It's a genuine, old-school dungeon crawler that respects your time and your wallet.

features

  • Fluid Combat System 🎮: Unlike Eternium, which uses a tap-to-move system, AnimA ARPG features a virtual joystick and dodge-roll mechanic. This makes kiting enemies and dodging attacks feel much more responsive, especially during boss fights where timing is everything.
  • Deep Character Customization 🔧: The skill tree is surprisingly deep for a mobile title. You can mix and match active skills from different classes by equipping special runes, which is a feature that even Diablo Immortal lacks. This lets you create hybrid builds, like a warrior using ice spells, which keeps replayability high.
  • No Energy System ⚡: Many free mobile RPGs like Raid: Shadow Legends force you to wait for stamina or energy to refill before you can play. AnimA ARPG has none of that. You can grind for hours straight if you want, which is a huge plus for dedicated players like me who hate time-gated progression.

pros

  • Great Endgame Content 🏆: After you finish the campaign, there are rift-like dungeons and a boss rush mode. Compared to Titan Quest, which basically ends after the main story, AnimA offers a reason to keep farming for better loot. The rift system scales in difficulty, so your build is always being tested.
  • Offline Mode Support 📴: This is a massive advantage over Diablo Immortal, which requires a constant internet connection. AnimA ARPG lets you play fully offline, meaning you can grind on a plane or subway without worrying about signal. It automatically syncs your progress when you go online again, which is seamless.
  • Fair Monetization 💰: The in-app purchases are mostly cosmetic or for convenience (like extra stash space). There's no pay-to-win gear that gives you an advantage in PvP or leaderboard ranking. In Path of Exile Mobile (if it ever releases), I expect similar monetization, but right now, AnimA is the gold standard for fair pricing in a mobile ARPG.

cons

  • Repetitive Environments 🌑: The dungeons all look very similar after a while. Unlike Path of Exile's diverse zones (forests, deserts, prisons), AnimA ARPG relies heavily on dark caverns and castle ruins. It gets visually monotonous after 10 hours of grinding, and I often wish they'd add more varied tilesets.
  • Limited Social Features 👥: Compared to games like Diablo Immortal, which has clans, world bosses, and PvP battlegrounds, AnimA feels lonely. There's no trading system, no party play, and no global chat. It's a purely solo experience, which might bore players who enjoy the social grind of other ARPGs on Google Play.
  • Clunky Inventory Management 📦: The inventory space is very tight, and the sorting options are minimal. In Titan Quest, you can easily filter gear by type or rarity. In AnimA, you have to manually examine each item. Late-game, you'll spend almost as much time managing your stash as you do fighting demons, which gets tedious fast.
