Happy Glass from Lion Studios is one of those puzzle games that just clicks for me. It's a pure mobile game, available for free on the Google Play Store and the App Store, and there's no PC or console version. It first launched back in 2018, and the last time I checked my Android phone, it had over 100 million installs. That's a huge number, and for good reason. The game is free to download and install, but like almost every free app on the Google Play store, it has in-app purchases. You can buy hint packs or remove ads, and those purchases usually cost anywhere from $0.99 to $5.99. Honestly, the in-app ads are pretty frequent, which is the trade-off for not paying upfront. I don't mind watching a short ad for an extra hint, but it can get a bit much during a long session.
The gameplay is super simple. You just draw a single line to guide water from a pipe into a sad-looking glass. The best part is that it's incredibly easy to pick up and play for just a few minutes. I often find myself playing a level while waiting for coffee or during a quick break. The physics feel satisfying, and there's something oddly relaxing about watching the water flow. My favorite part is when you discover a clever solution that uses the most efficient line possible. Sometimes you'll overcomplicate things with a bunch of loops and turns, but then you realize a simple curve would work. That "aha!" moment is what keeps me coming back. It's a simple concept, but the 200+ levels introduce new obstacles like platforms and moving parts, which keeps the puzzle formula from feeling stale.
When you compare it to other drawing puzzle games, Happy Glass really is one of the best examples of the genre on Android. It's similar to games like Draw a Line or Draw the Bridge, but the focus on guiding a specific amount of liquid makes it feel more precise. I've seen a lot of knockoffs on the Google Play Store, but Lion Studios did a great job with the polish and the feeling of accomplishment. The physics engine is also more responsive than in some cheaper apps I've tried. I would recommend this app over other options because it respects your time. You can clear a level in seconds if you're smart about it, and you don't have to sit through five-minute tutorials. It's just you, the water, and the glass. For a free app with this many levels, it's hard to beat the value.
features
- Simple Line Drawing 🖊️ Unlike games such as "Draw a Line" where you're drawing a path for a ball, Happy Glass focuses on a single continuous line to redirect water. This makes it easier to understand but harder to master, as you need to account for water physics.
- Physics-Based Puzzles 💧 The water physics are surprisingly satisfying. It's not just about drawing a barrier; you need to think about gravity and flow rate. Other puzzle games like "Brain It On!" might have physics, but Happy Glass makes it the core mechanic.
- No Time Pressure ⏳ You can think about each puzzle for as long as you want. Unlike many mobile games that use timers, Happy Glass lets you sit back, analyze the level, and draw your line without any rush.
pros
- Quick and Casual Sessions ⌛ Each level can be solved in seconds if you find the right solution. This is a huge strength over more complex puzzle games like "Monument Valley," which require a bigger time investment. I can play three levels while my coffee brews.
- High Replay Value 🔄 The "three-star" system per level encourages you to replay and find more efficient solutions. You can also create your own levels and share them, which is a feature I don't see in many similar drawing apps on the Google Play Store.
- Easy to Learn, Hard to Master 🧠 The first 50 levels are a breeze, but then the difficulty ramps up nicely. It reminds me of "World of Goo" in that way, but this is much more accessible for a mobile device.
cons
- Repetitive Ads 📺 The frequency of advertisements can be annoying. While I understand it's a free app, you sometimes see an ad after every single level. Games like "Cut the Rope" do a better job of spacing out their ads.
- Limited Creativity ✏️ You can only draw a single, continuous line. Some similar puzzle apps let you draw multiple shapes or erase and redraw, which gives more flexibility. In Happy Glass, you're stuck with one shot, and if you mess up, you have to wait for the animation to finish.
- Too Many Clones 🔄 Because Happy Glass is so popular, the Google Play Store is flooded with copycats. This makes it hard to tell if you're downloading the original Lion Studios version or a low-quality knockoff that's filled with malware or worse ads.
