Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is, without a doubt, one of the most iconic open-world action-adventure games ever made. Originally launched back in 2004 for the PlayStation 2, it has since made its way onto basically every platform you can think of, including PC (you can grab it on Steam), Xbox, and of course, Nintendo Switch. The mobile version, which is what I'm mainly talking about here, is available on both the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store. On Android, this app has racked up over 100 million installs, which is insane for a paid game. It's not free to download—you'll need to shell out around $6.99 to install it, but once you do, there are no in-app purchases to nickel-and-dime you. There are, however, some in-app ads if you want to watch them for small bonuses, but they're totally optional. This is a pure mobile port of a console classic, so don't expect any new content, but it runs surprisingly well on modern phones.
The gameplay is exactly what you'd expect from a classic GTA title. You play as Carl "CJ" Johnson, who returns to his hometown of Los Santos after his mother's murder, and gets dragged back into the world of gangs, corruption, and chaos. The best part of this game is the sheer scale of it. You've got three massive cities to explore (Los Santos, San Fierro, and Las Venturas), plus countryside, deserts, and mountains in between. The missions are varied—you'll do everything from drive-bys and heists to flying planes and even piloting a harrier jet. My favorite part of playing this game on Android is the touch-screen controls, which actually work better than you'd think. You can customize the button layout, and there's a camera-lock feature that helps during firefights. Plus, having the entire state of San Andreas in my pocket is just wild—I can pick it up, do a few missions, and put it down during my commute. The radio stations are still stacked with classic tracks, and the voice acting from Samuel L. Jackson and others holds up incredibly well.
Compared to other mobile open-world games, San Andreas is a beast. Look at something like Gangstar Vegas or Payback 2—those are okay for quick fun, but they feel shallow and are often bloated with pay-to-win mechanics. This app is a complete, no-strings-attached experience. It also stomps other GTA mobile ports like Chinatown Wars because that game was top-down and didn't have the same immersive feel. The only real competition on mobile is maybe Bully: Anniversary Edition, also from Rockstar, but that game is smaller in scope. San Andreas offers way more freedom—you can swim, fly, customize your character's appearance and stats (by eating at Cluckin' Bell or working out at the gym), and even date women. It's not just a nostalgia trip; it's still a genuinely fun game that respects your time and wallet. If you've never played it, this is the best way to experience it on the go. If you have, you know why it's a masterpiece.
features
- True Open-World Freedom 🏙️: Unlike many mobile games that lock areas behind paywalls or level gates, San Andreas lets you explore the entire state right from the start. You can steal a car, drive to the countryside, and parachute off mountains without ever touching a mission.
- Deep Character Customization 💪: You can actually make CJ fat, muscular, or slim by eating, working out, or just ignoring food. Your stats in driving, shooting, and stamina all improve based on what you do regularly, which adds a real RPG-like depth that games like Payback 2 completely lack.
- Full Controller Support 🎮: The Android version natively supports Bluetooth controllers like the Xbox or PlayStation pads. This makes aiming and driving feel as crisp as the original console version, which is a huge step up from most mobile ports that force you into touch controls only.
pros
- Massive Content for the Price 💰: For a one-time $7 download, you get a 40+ hour campaign, hundreds of side missions, and a ton of hidden collectibles. Compare that to free-to-play games like Gangstar New Orleans that ask for $10 just for a decent in-game weapon—this is a steal.
- Aged Like Fine Wine 🎵: The soundtrack alone is worth the install. Over 100 licensed songs from the 90s, including Dr. Dre, 2Pac, and Guns N' Roses, plus hilarious radio talk shows. No other mobile game comes close to this level of audio production.
- Rockstar's Attention to Detail 🔍: The world feels alive. NPCs react to your actions, you can get tattoos, change your haircut, and even have gang territories to fight over. Games like The Simpsons: Hit & Run feel robotic compared to this level of polish.
cons
- Clunky Touch Controls 🕹️: While the Android port has customizable buttons, some missions require precise aiming or quick driving that touch-screen input can't replicate. Titles like Max Payne Mobile have better optimized controls for mobile because they're slower-paced.
- Outdated Graphics 🖼️: Let's be honest—this game looks rough by today's standards. Texture pop-in and blurry backgrounds are common, especially on lower-end phones. Even GTA: Chinatown Wars looks sharper due to its art style, while San Andreas feels like a direct PS2 port.
- Missing Multiplayer Mode 🌐: The original PS2 and PC versions had multiplayer via split-screen or mods, but the mobile version is strictly single-player. If you want to play with friends, you're better off sticking to the PC version on Steam or trying something like Gangstar Vegas for online modes.
