Alright, let's talk about Puzzles & Survival, developed by 37GAMES. This is a hybrid game that blends match-3 puzzle mechanics with a zombie apocalypse base-building strategy. It's primarily a mobile game, so you can find it on the Google Play store and the App Store, but it's also available on PC through their official launcher and some third-party app stores. I haven't seen it on Steam or consoles like Xbox or Switch, so it's really a pure mobile and PC crossplay experience. It first launched back in 2020, and it's been growing ever since. On Google Play, it's racked up over 10 million installs, which is no small feat. The game is free to download and play, but it's definitely a gacha-heavy experience. You'll find in-app purchases everywhere, from monthly subscription passes to limited-time bundles that can cost anywhere from a dollar to over a hundred bucks. There are also in-app ads, but they're mostly optional—you can watch them to speed up timers or get extra resources, which is pretty standard for this genre.

The core gameplay loop is simple but addictive. During battles, you solve match-3 puzzles to deal damage to zombies and enemy players. Matching gems of the same color charges your heroes' special skills, while creating long combos or special gems unleashes devastating area-of-effect attacks. Outside of combat, you're building and upgrading your base, training troops, and researching tech. The best part of this game, hands down, is the satisfaction of wiping out a screen full of zombies with a well-timed combo. My favorite aspect, though, has to be the hero collection system. Each hero has unique abilities tied to different roles—damage, healing, or tanking—and figuring out the best team synergies is what keeps me coming back. The seasonal events, like the "Resident Evil" collaborations, also add fresh content and exclusive heroes, which is a nice touch for a mobile game.

Compared to other strategy-puzzle hybrids, Puzzles & Survival stands out because it doesn't just feel like a puzzle game with a story tacked on. Games like Empires & Puzzles offer a similar blend, but the zombie theme and the gritty art style give this one a darker, more immersive tone. Unlike Gems of War, which leans heavily into fantasy, Puzzles & Survival nails the survival horror vibe without being too scary. The base-building is also more involved than what you'd find in most match-3 games—it actually feels like you're rebuilding civilization, not just decorating a camp. If you're tired of the same old candy-crushing and want something that gives you a real sense of progression and community through alliances, I'd say give this a shot. Just be prepared for the grind and the pay-to-progress curves that come with the territory.

features

  • Match-3 with a Purpose 🧩 Every puzzle you solve directly impacts combat—matching gems deals real damage to enemies, heals your heroes, or charges their ultimate skills. Unlike pure puzzle games, your moves have meaningful consequences, making each board feel intense.
  • Base Building & Strategy 🏰 You're not just playing puzzles; you're managing a full-on zombie-proof fortress. You can upgrade structures, train soldiers, and research technologies. It's way deeper than what you'd get in something like Best Fiends, where puzzles are the entire game.
  • Alliance Wars & PvP ⚔️ This isn't a solo experience. You join an alliance, coordinate attacks on other players, and defend your territory. The real-time strategy elements and alliance chat make it feel like a mini-MMO, which is rare for a puzzle game on Android.

pros

  • Engaging Hero Collection 🦸 The roster of heroes is huge, and each one has unique skills tied to specific roles (damage, support, tank). The "Reaper" and "Maddie" are some of my favorites. This beats Empires & Puzzles in terms of variety and visual flair, as each hero has a distinct combat animation.
  • Cross-Platform Play 💻 Since you can play on both mobile and PC, your progress syncs seamlessly. I often grind puzzles on the bus via Android, then hop onto PC at home for alliance wars. Last Shelter: Survival doesn't offer this same level of fluid crossplay, which is a big advantage.
  • Frequent Events & Collabs 🎉 37GAMES keeps the content fresh with themed events. The recent Resident Evil collab brought in Leon and Jill as playable heroes, which was a massive draw for fans. This kind of crossover content is rare in games like Gems of War, which stick to original IPs.

cons

  • Aggressive Pay-to-Win Mechanics 💰 The game is heavily monetized. Power spikes often come from limited-time bundles that cost serious money. Even as a patient free player, you'll hit walls where the only way to progress faster is to spend. Evony: The King's Return has similar issues, but at least you can grind endlessly there without as many hard locks.
  • Grindy Resource Management 🔄 Upgrading buildings and heroes requires massive amounts of resources that take hours or days to gather without spending. The build queues can feel like a second job. Compared to State of Survival, which streamlines the resource loop, this one feels more punishing.
  • Outdated UI Clutter 🖥️ The interface is a mess of pop-ups, bubbles, and event notifications. It's overwhelming, especially on smaller phone screens. Navigating the menus feels like wading through ads for your own purchases. Rise of Kingdoms handles its UI way more elegantly, which makes this feel dated by comparison.
