Okay, so I've been neck-deep in the world of weird mobile horror for a while now, and Garten of Banban 7 is the latest chapter I've sunk my teeth into. This is a first-person horror puzzle game, a direct sequel in the ongoing saga. It's a pure mobile game, available right now on the Google Play Store and the App Store, and as far as I know, there's no PC or console version yet like you'd find on Steam or Xbox. The first game in this series launched back in early 2023, and the installs have been massive—over 10 million on the Google Play store alone, which is wild for a series this niche. The biggest selling point is that it's completely free to download and play. There are no forced ads popping up every two minutes, which I really appreciate. But, like most free mobile games, there are in-app purchases. The main one is a "VIP Pass" that costs around $4.99, which gives you some cosmetics and a few extra hints. You can absolutely beat the whole game without spending a dime, but the option is there if you want to support the devs.
The gameplay is pretty straightforward for the genre. You're dropped into these bizarre, colorful but deeply unsettling environments, and you have to solve puzzles to progress. You explore, find items, and figure out how they interact with the world. The best part of this game, hands down, is the atmosphere. It has this uncanny valley thing going on where everything looks like a happy cartoon, but the music, the sound design, and the monsters lurking around are genuinely creepy. My favorite part is the monster design. They've gone completely off the rails in this installment. There's this one creature, a giant, weeping hot dog, that is so absurd it circles back to being terrifying. The puzzles are fair, too. They're not brain-busters, but they require you to actually look around and remember details, which is a lot more satisfying than just tapping on everything. I've had a few "aha!" moments that made me feel like a genius, which is exactly what I want from a horror puzzle game on my phone.
Compared to the big names in the genre, like Granny or Poppy Playtime, Garten of Banban takes a very different approach. Granny is all about stealth and a super restrictive environment; it's tense, but can feel a bit repetitive. Poppy Playtime has the high-budget polish and complex story, but the mobile port is clunky and the chapters cost money. Banban is the "weird cousin" of the group. It doesn't take itself as seriously, which makes the horror more fun and less stressful. The graphics are less refined, but that's part of the charm. The puzzles are more varied than in Granny, and the story, while absolutely bonkers, is more engaging to follow. If you're tired of the same old "hide and seek" type of horror and want something that's a bit more of a narrative-driven mystery with some genuine laugh-out-loud moments from the sheer absurdity, this is the app to download. It's a solid, free experience that respects your time and doesn't bombard you with ads. I'd say just give it a try; you've got nothing to lose since it's a free install.
features
- Absurdist Horror Vibe 👻: Unlike games like Granny which rely on pure tension, Banban 7 doubles down on its bizarre, almost comedic horror. The monsters are silly yet scary, and the story is a fever dream. It feels less like a traditional horror game and more like you're exploring a messed-up cartoon, which is a refreshing take on the genre on Android.
- Fair Puzzle Design 🧩: The puzzles are the core of the experience, and they're much more logical than the random trial-and-error you find in some games on Google Play. You actually have to explore and pay attention to the environment. There's no pixel-hunting for impossible-to-find keys, just solid, well-telegraphed challenges that make you feel smart when you figure them out.
- No Annoying Mobile Game Traps 📵: This is a huge plus. The game is free to download, and there are no forced video ads every 30 seconds. The in-app purchases are purely cosmetic or for hints you don't need. It respects your time, which is surprisingly rare for a popular free app. You can just play the game without being interrupted, which is all I ask for.
pros
- Perfect for Short Sessions ⏱️: The game is broken into clear, digestible chapters. I can pick up my phone, play for 10-15 minutes during a commute, solve one or two puzzles, and feel like I made progress. Compared to a game like Poppy Playtime, which has longer, more cinematic sequences that are tough to pause, Banban is perfectly designed for an on-the-go experience on your Android device.
- Genuinely Funny Writing 😂: The dialogue and notes you find are hilarious. The characters say the most ridiculous things with complete sincerity. This is a major strength over the standard horror games on Google Play. It doesn't try to be a grimdark thriller. It knows it's a silly game about a giant screaming hot dog, and it leans into it, which makes the whole experience a lot more enjoyable.
- Strong Sense of Mystery 🕵️: The overarching story is a tangled mess, but it's a fun tangled mess. Every new chapter reveals more weird lore, and I'm genuinely invested in finding out what's really going on in this place. It's more compelling than the simple "escape the house" premise of Granny. I'm playing not just to survive, but to understand the madness.
cons
- Short Playtime ⌛: This is the biggest downside. The entire game can be completed in under an hour, possibly even 30-40 minutes if you don't get stuck. While it's free to download, you'll be left wanting more almost immediately. Compared to the longer, more replayable horror games on the platform, like Granny that has multiple difficulty levels, Banban is a one-and-done experience until the next chapter drops.
- Janky Controls 🕹️: The touch controls are functional but not great. Moving around and interacting with objects can feel a bit floaty and imprecise, especially in tight spaces. It's a common problem on mobile, but games like Poppy Playtime have smoother virtual stick implementations on the App Store. You'll get used to it, but it can be frustrating during chase sequences.
- Bugs and Glitches 🐛: I ran into a few minor bugs, like a texture failing to load or a character getting stuck in a wall. Nothing game-breaking, but it does break the immersion. For a game that's been out for a while, I expected it to be a little more polished. It's not as bad as some older mobile ports on Google Play, but it's noticeable.
