Evony: The King's Return is a mobile strategy MMO that has been taking up space on my Android phone for a while now. It's a blend of city-building, resource management, and real-time PvP warfare, all wrapped up in a historical fantasy skin. You can download and install it directly from the Google Play Store or the Apple App Store, and it's completely free to get started. The game launched way back in 2016, and it's been a massive hit ever since, racking up over 50 million installs on Google Play alone. While it's primarily a mobile app, you can also play it on PC via emulators, but there's no official Steam or Xbox/Switch version. As for the wallet, yeah, there are in-app purchases everywhere. You'll see packs for resources, speed-ups, and premium generals costing anywhere from a dollar to a hundred bucks. It's definitely a "pay-to-progress-faster" kind of deal, and there are also annoying in-app ads if you want to skip timers or get freebies.

When you first install the app, you're dropped into a medieval city with a bunch of buildings to upgrade. The core loop is all about gathering food, wood, stone, and ore, training troops, and researching tech. But the real meat of Evony is the "general" system. You collect historical figures like Joan of Arc or Genghis Khan, level them up, equip them, and send them off to battle. The best part for me is the all-out server vs. server wars. Your alliance will coordinate attacks, use teleports to jump across the map, and try to burn down enemy cities. It's chaotic, stressful, and incredibly satisfying when you pull off a coordinated assault. My favorite thing is rallying bosses with my alliance mates. We get together, chat in the in-game chat, and take down massive monsters for huge rewards. That sense of community is the only reason I've kept the game installed for over a year.

If you've played games like Rise of Kingdoms or State of Survival, Evony will feel familiar, but also different. Rise of Kingdoms is slicker, has a better UI, and feels less like a cash grab. State of Survival is cleaner thematically with its zombie focus. But Evony has a certain "old school" charm. It's less polished, more aggressive with its monetization, but the gameplay is deeper in some ways. I recommend this game if you're a hardcore strategist who loves micromanaging and has a high tolerance for grind. It's not for casual players or those with a short attention span. But if you want a deep, complex game that rewards patience and alliance coordination, give it a shot. Just be ready to either spend cash or spend a lot of time.

features

  • General System 🎖️: Unlike most mobile strategy games where you just level a single commander, Evony lets you collect hundreds of unique generals. Each has different stats, specialties, and skills that you can level and equip. It's like collecting Pokemon but for warfare. This depth lets you build highly specialized teams for gathering, PvE, or PvP.
  • PvP and Alliance Wars ⚔️: The real endgame here is the constant server conflict. You can attack other players, burn their cities, and steal their resources. The "Server vs. Server" event is a massive weekly brawl where your entire server unites to attack another. It's way more strategic than the typical "mass attack" found in many similar titles.
  • Monster Hunting 🐉: The world map is crawling with massive boss monsters. You and your alliance can rally them, dealing massive damage over hours. It's a great PvE co-op activity that yields huge rewards, including general items and resources. It breaks up the grind nicely and gives you a reason to coordinate with your team.

pros

  • Deep Customization 🛠️: Compared to something like Last Shelter: Survival, Evony lets you truly build your city any way you want. You can be a peaceful farmer, a raiding pirate, or a balanced player. Your general choices and building upgrades matter more than just having the highest power number.
  • Massive Scale 🌍: The map is gigantic. There's a central "Holy Palace" that servers fight over, plus huge resource tiles and boss spawns. It feels like a real world, not just a small arena. In contrast, Rise of Kingdoms feels more linear and guided.
  • Active Community 🤝: The alliance system is fantastic. You get a real sense of camaraderie when you're chatting, defending each other, and planning attacks. The game even has a built-in translator for global chats, which is rare and useful. It makes the grind feel less lonely.

cons

  • Pay-to-Win Heaviness 💰: This is the biggest downside. While free-to-play is possible, you'll hit a hard wall after a few months. Whales (big spenders) will completely dominate you. Compared to Rise of Kingdoms, where spending gives a smaller edge, in Evony, it's a massive difference. You'll constantly see offers for $100 packs.
  • Grindy Progression ⏳: The early game is okay, but later upgrades take days or even weeks without spending money. You'll be stuck waiting for timers constantly. It feels like the game is designed to frustrate you into paying to skip the wait. Last Shelter has a similar issue, but Evony is worse.
  • Outdated Visuals 🖼️: The graphics are fine, but they aren't great. The UI is cluttered and feels a bit old-school. The animations are stiff, and the text is tiny on mobile. It doesn't look as sleek as modern competitors like Rise of Kingdoms or even Age of Empires: Castle Siege.
