So, I've been diving deep into MementoMori: AFKRPG on my Android phone for a while now, and it's a pretty interesting take on the idle RPG genre. It first launched globally in late 2022 on both Google Play and the App Store, and it's strictly a mobile game—don't expect to find it on Steam or your Xbox or Switch. It's free to download and install, which is always a plus, but like most free-to-play mobile games, it's got in-app purchases. You'll see packs ranging from a few bucks for some daily currency up to $99 for bigger bundles if you want to whale out. It has already racked up over a million installs on the Google Play store, so it's got a decent following. The game is an idle RPG, meaning your characters auto-fight, but it leans heavily into a gorgeous watercolor art style and a haunting soundtrack, which sets it way apart from your standard grinding fare.

Gameplay-wise, it's pretty hands-off, which I actually love after a long day. You form a team of five "Witches"—each with unique backstories and roles like tank, healer, or DPS—and they auto-battle through stages. The best part is that progress keeps rolling even when you close the app, so you wake up to tons of loot. But my favorite part is the "Fateweaving" gacha system; pulling for new characters with distinct designs and skills feels rewarding, and the soundtrack by the band "Memento Mori" is legitimately one of the best in any mobile game I've played. Unlike many other idle games where you just stare at numbers, here you get these beautiful "Laments" that reveal each character's story—it adds emotional depth you don't usually find in this genre. The strategic layer comes from gear, leveling, and the meditation system where you sacrifice dupes to boost one character's level cap, letting you push your main carry way higher than the rest of your team.

Compared to other idle RPGs on Android, like AFK Arena or Mobile Legends: Adventure, MementoMori stands out for its presentation. Those games are fine, but they feel a bit more generic anime-fantasy. MementoMori's melancholic watercolor art and piano-heavy soundtrack create a mood that's more akin to an interactive art piece than a typical grinder. I'd recommend it if you want something that feels premium and has a strong narrative vibe, without needing to micro-manage every second. Sure, it's a gacha game at heart with heavy monetization, but as a free player, I've had a solid experience just enjoying the story and collecting characters over time. It's not going to replace hardcore strategy games, but for a chill side game on your phone that looks and sounds amazing, you can't go wrong with this download.

features

  • Stunning Presentation 🎨: The watercolor art style and original soundtrack are a cut above. While games like AFK Arena have a bright cartoon look, MementoMori uses melancholic, painted visuals and a haunting piano OST that makes every screen feel like a storybook, even on Android.
  • Strategic Leveling System 📈: Instead of leveling all characters, you choose a “link” partner to share levels with your main carry via the Meditation system. This is more flexible than in similar idle RPGs, letting you build a hyper-invested core without wasting resources on every single pull.
  • Engaging Lore Delivery 📖: Each character has “Laments,” which are cutscenes with the character and a full song. Most idle games toss text at you; MementoMori actually makes you care about your team's backstories through music and art, making the Google Play install feel worthwhile.

pros

  • Atmosphere and Art Direction 🌟: This game's biggest strength is its mood. The watercolor art is unique and consistent, something you don't see in standard anime idle RPGs like Idle Heroes. It feels sophisticated, like you're playing a piece of art rather than just another gacha app.
  • Soundtrack Quality 🎵: The OST, performed by the real-world band Memento Mori, is phenomenal. It's rare for a mobile game to have music that I'd listen to outside of the game. This puts it leagues above similar games on the Google Play store that just use generic looped tracks.
  • Generous Idle Progression 💤: You don't need to babysit the game. You can close the app for hours and come back to huge upgrades. For busy players who want a deep RPG without the grind, the Android version is perfect compared to more active games like Another Eden.

cons

  • Heavy Gacha Monetization 💸: The rates for top-tier characters are low, and the in-app purchase costs can be steep. Unlike AFK Arena, which throws currency at you, MementoMori can feel stingy, making it tough for free players to progress quickly without patience.
  • Auto-Battle Spam 🔄: While it's an AFK RPG, the battles are strictly auto. You have no control over skills or targeting. This is fine for idle fans, but if you come from strategy games like Raid: Shadow Legends, you might miss the tactical depth during actual fights.
  • Linear Progression Wall 🧱: After the initial honeymoon, progress slows to a crawl. You often hit a hard wall where the only way forward is to wait days for resources or pay. Games like Mobile Legends: Adventure offer more frequent dopamine hits through events, whereas MementoMori can feel like a waiting simulator.
