So, I've been messing around with Pixel Girls: Potion Run on my Android for a few weeks now, and honestly, it's a pretty solid time-waster if you're into the whole runner genre mixed with a bit of gacha flair. This is a pure mobile game, first launched back in late 2023 on the Google Play Store and the App Store, and as of now, it's racked up over 1 million installs on Android alone. It's free to download and play, which is nice, but like most free games, there's in-app purchases. You're looking at spending anywhere from $0.99 to about $19.99 for various currency packs or skin bundles. No forced video ads every run, but there are optional ones if you want a revive or extra coins. I haven't seen it on Steam or any console, so it's strictly a phone app experience, perfect for picking up during a commute. The gacha element is real though—you spin for new “Pixel Girls” characters, and that's where your wallet might get tempted.
The core gameplay is dead simple: you control a girl running through a fantasy world, dodging obstacles, collecting potions, and trying to survive as long as possible. You swipe left or right to change lanes, tap to jump, and slide under barriers—classic runner mechanics. What makes it stand out for me is the character customization and the potion brewing system. As you run, you gather ingredients, and after each run, you can brew potions that give you temporary buffs like speed boosts or magnet effects for the next attempt. My favorite part? It's the variety of Pixel Girls you can unlock each with unique abilities. One girl might double your coin pickup, another might let you tank one hit without dying. It adds a layer of strategy where you're not just mindlessly running—you're thinking about which character fits your playstyle. The pixel art is also a nice throwback, with chunky sprites that feel nostalgic without being lazy. I've had sessions where I just grind to unlock a new girl, and that loop keeps me coming back.
Compared to other runners like Subway Surfers or Temple Run 2, this one feels more RPG-ish. Subway Surfers is all about high scores and grinding coins for outfits, but there's no real character depth. Here, the gacha and potion system give it a layer I appreciate. Another one I tried was Potion Permit on PC, but that's a full-on sim game, not a runner, so it's not really comparable. For mobile, Pixel Girls: Potion Run hits a sweet spot between casual tapping and light resource management. It's not as polished as Dragon Hills 2 in terms of physics, but the character collection scratches that “gotta catch ‘em all” itch. If you're tired of the same old endless runner formula, this Android app breathes some life into it with the potion crafting and unique girls. Download it from Google Play if you want something fresh, but don't expect a deep story—it's just fun, colorful chaos that respects your time.
features
- Potion Brewing System 🧪 Unlike Subway Surfers where you just collect coins, this game lets you brew potions from ingredients found mid-run these potions give you active buffs for future runs, making each attempt feel more strategic. It's a small twist, but it changes the mindless running into a planning loop.
- Gacha Character Unlocks 🎴 Each Pixel Girl has a passive ability that affects gameplay, like increased magnet duration or extra starting shield. Temple Run 2 has character skins, but they're purely cosmetic. Here, you're incentivized to roll for girls that fit your style, which adds a collectible layer.
- Pixel Art Aesthetics 👾 The graphics are deliberately retro, with clean sprite work and vibrant color palettes. It's not as slick as Dragon Hills 2, but the nostalgic look helps it stand out among modern mobile runners that often go for 3D or vector styles.
pros
- Engaging Progression Loop 🔁 The mix of ingredient gathering, potion crafting, and character unlocking keeps you invested. In Subway Surfers, you're just chasing a high score, but here every run contributes to a tangible goal, like brewing a new potion or leveling up a girl. It feels rewarding.
- No Pay-to-Win Barrier 💰 While there are in-app purchases, the game is fair. You can earn premium currency through gameplay and free daily spins. Unlike Honkai Impact 3rd, where gacha can feel punishing, this one gives you plenty of free rolls, so you don't feel stuck without spending.
- Quick Session Friendly ⏱ Runs are short, often under five minutes, but the potion system encourages multiple attempts. It's perfect for Android users who want to kill time without committing to a 20-minute match. Crossy Road gets this right too, but this game offers more depth per session.
cons
- Repetitive Level Layouts 🔄 After the first few hours, you'll notice the obstacle patterns recycling. Temple Run 2 does a better job with procedural generation and environmental variety this game's levels feel static, which dulls the challenge over time.
- Gacha Odds Can Be Frustrating 🎲 Getting a high-tier Pixel Girl requires luck. In Arknights, the pity system is more transparent, but here, I've dumped 30 rolls without a new girl. It's typical for the genre, but compared to Sky: Children of Light which avoids gacha entirely, it feels cheap.
- Limited Endgame Content 🏁 Once you unlock all characters and max out potions, there's not much to do except chase leaderboard scores. Disney Speedstorm has seasonal events to keep things fresh, but this game lacks that. I hope future updates add boss fights or co-op modes.
