Alright, let's talk about Zenless Zone Zero, or ZZZ as most of us call it. This isn't your typical gacha game, it's a stylish, fast-paced action RPG that feels like a playable anime opening. It's an action-combat game at its core, with a heavy focus on stylish dodging, parrying, and swapping between a three-character squad to chain together insane combos. You're definitely going to want a decent Android or iOS device to run this smoothly, I'm playing on my phone and it can get a bit warm, but it's also available on PC via their official launcher and on Steam, as well as on the PS5. It's not on Xbox or Switch as of now, which is a bummer for those players. The game first launched globally in July 2024, and it's been a monster since day one, racking up over 50 million downloads on the Google Play Store alone, and of course, it's a top grosser on the App Store too. It's free to download and play, which is great, but the gacha is real. In-app purchases range from a few bucks for a monthly pass to over a hundred dollars if you're truly trying to max out a character's "mindscape" (their dupe system). There are also in-app ads, but they're only for small in-game currency bonuses, so they are totally skippable and not intrusive at all.
Playing ZZZ is a pretty wild experience, I've sunk a ton of hours into it since launch. The core gameplay loop revolves around running around a hub area, taking on "Commissions" which are these bite-sized missions that feel like a mix of an ARG and a roguelite. You move your character around a board game-like map, solving puzzles and triggering encounters before diving into the real meat: the combat. The best part for me is the "chain attack" system. When you stun an enemy or perfectly dodge, you can swap in another character for a devastating follow-up attack, which feels incredibly rewarding and looks so fluid. The music also absolutely slaps, it's this mix of electronic, lo-fi hip-hop that sets the tone perfectly, and the UI is probably the most stylish I've ever seen in a mobile game. Unlike games like Honkai: Star Rail where you're more passive with auto-battles, ZZZ demands active participation and perfectly timed inputs. It's that hands-on, high-octane feeling that keeps me coming back for just one more run, especially when I'm messing around with a new character's moveset for the first time.
If you've played games like Punishing: Gray Raven or Honkai Impact 3rd, you'll feel right at home with the combat pacing, but ZZZ has its own distinct vibe. While those games lean heavily into a serious, world-threatening drama, ZZZ is much more grounded and quirky, even with its hollows and ethereal monsters. The characters are all part of different factions in New Eridu, and they have day jobs like being a waitress, an engineer, or a robot maid, which makes them feel more relatable and fun. I think the biggest draw compared to my previous mobile action games is the style. Everything, from the menus to the enemy design, is this hyper-modern, streetwear aesthetic that just oozes personality. It also respects your time a bit more than some other games; the daily and weekly tasks are much quicker to complete, which is a huge plus for a busy gamer who just wants to log in, do some dailies, and get a few solid combat runs in without feeling like I'm signing up for a second job.
features
- Hollow Deep Dive System 🕹️: This is ZZZ's unique endgame mode. You pick a character and can only use that one character to fight through a series of escalating challenges. It tests your mastery of a single agent's kit, and the unique buffs you can pick up during the run make it feel like a fresh roguelite experience every time, which really sets it apart from the standard "daily" content you see in similar gachas.
- Agent Switch Combat ⚔️: You don't just build a team and auto-play. Swapping characters mid-combo to trigger "Quick Assist" or "Chain Attacks" is not just a mechanic, it's the core identity of the game. It's for players who love that hands-on, twitchy gameplay that you find in hardcore action titles, but with the accessibility of a mobile game.
- Style and Presentation 🎨: The game's UI, music, and character designs are all cohesive and incredibly stylish. Watching your character sprint across the environment is a whole vibe. It has a unique "urban fantasy" aesthetic that not a lot of other games in the gacha space, like Genshin Impact, try to pull off, and it nails it.
- TV Mode Exploration 📺: The running across a grid map is a super distinct feature. Instead of having a huge open world to explore, you're navigating a "TV" screen, which allows for clever puzzle design and quick, disposable missions. This keeps the grind from getting repetitive since you're constantly seeing new tiles and events, and it's a bold design choice that fans of tactical board games will appreciate.
pros
- High-Impact Combat 💥: The combat is fantastic. It feels like you're playing a character action game like Devil May Cry, but on your phone. The hit-stop, the sound effects, the visual feedback from a perfect dodge, it all adds up to a game that feels amazing to play and is far more engaging than the turn-based or auto-battle systems in games like Honkai: Star Rail or AFK Arena.
- Generous Launch & Events 🎁: I have to say, for a free-to-play app, they were pretty generous at launch and through the various patches. Getting a free standard 5-star character early on was a great move, and the events give out a decent amount of Polychromes (the premium currency) to keep you pulling without spending a dime on Google Play. It makes sticking with the game feel less painful.
- Streamlined Daily Grind ⏱️: Compared to something like Genshin Impact which requires you to travel across a massive map for dailies, ZZZ is all about getting in, doing your commissions, and getting out in like 15 minutes. It's a quality-of-life feature that shows they understand the players' time, and it's a major reason why I haven't uninstalled the app from my phone.
- Character Personality 👥: The agents have far more personality than your standard gacha archetypes. They have day jobs, hobbies, and unique quirks that are woven into their in-game dialogue and combat styles. This makes you actually care about pulling for them not just because they're strong, but because you genuinely like them, which is more than I can say for a lot of the cast in other games in the same genre.
cons
- Platforming and Exploration 🚶: The TV mode is cool, but the actual "open world" sections of the game outside the hub are pretty small and linear. There's not much to do besides explore a small district and talk to NPCs. It's not the same sense of adventure you get from running around the world in a game like Genshin Impact, but the trade-off is a faster-paced experience.
- Gacha Dupe System is Harsh 💸: Like most HoYoverse games, the "Mindscape" system (getting duplicates of a character to make them significantly stronger) is a must for hardcore content, and it can be a massive money sink if you're not a patient free-to-play player. You're looking at spending potentially hundreds of dollars to fully unlock a single character's potential, which is a tough pill to swallow.
- Single-Character Endgame Mode 🎯: The aforementioned Hollow Deep Dive mode might not be for everyone. If you hate using a certain character or are forced to use one you didn't build, it can feel like a chore. It strips away the team synergy that makes the main combat so much fun, which can be a drag for players who love the tag-team mechanics. It's a very specific challenge that can burn you out.
- Lack of Endgame Content Variety 📉: Once you clear the main story and finish the events, the endgame, aside from the Deep Dive, is pretty much the same combat challenges over and over. I wish they added more modes to play with different rules, or a boss rush that's a bit more engaging than the one we have, because otherwise you're just logging in for dailies, which can get stale for a veteran player.
