Tiles Survive! is a survival strategy game from FunPlus International AG, and it sits somewhere between a base builder and a light strategy game with a zombie apocalypse theme. You can get it on Android through Google Play and on iOS via the App Store, and it is a mobile-only title, so do not expect a Steam or Switch version anytime soon. I first installed it in 2024, and it has already passed a million downloads on Google Play. The download is free, which is how most people will find it, but there are in-app purchases for speeding things up and buying bundles. Those bundles run from a couple of dollars up to around twenty bucks, and while you can play without spending, the game does nudge you toward the shop now and then.

The way you play is pretty straightforward. You clear fog-covered tiles, gather resources, build up your shelter, and recruit survivors who each have their own jobs. Combat is simple enough to learn in a few minutes, and most of your time goes into managing your little camp and sending squads out to fight the infected. The best part for me is the exploration, because every new tile you uncover can hide something useful or something nasty, and that keeps me opening the app just one more time. My favorite moment is always the first hour or two, when your base is a mess and every small upgrade actually feels like progress. Later on the pace slows down, which is where the waiting starts to bite.

If you have played State of Survival or Whiteout Survival, you will recognize a lot of the loop here: build, wait, upgrade, repeat, with a few battles mixed in. What makes Tiles Survive! easier to stick with is the tile-clearing setup, which feels more hands-on than the endless menu tapping in those other titles. I would recommend it to someone who wants a zombie builder that is not too demanding. It is not as deep as State of Survival, and it asks for your patience once the timers grow, but for a free download on Android it does a lot right.

features

  • Tile-by-tile exploration 🧭 - You uncover the map one square at a time, which makes scouting feel like an actual activity instead of a loading screen, and it is the fastest way to find resources and survivors.
  • Survivor management 👥 - Each survivor has a role, and assigning the right person to the right job makes your shelter run better, so you are always juggling people rather than just numbers.
  • Base building with purpose 🏠 - Upgrades feed directly into survival and combat strength, so every wall and workshop you place has a reason to exist, unlike games such as State of Survival where some buildings feel like filler.

pros

  • Easy to pick up 🎮 - The tutorial is quick, and within ten minutes you understand the whole loop, which is a big plus if you have bounced off more complex strategy games.
  • Free to try 💸 - You can install it and play a solid chunk without paying, and the shop never blocks your early progress the way it does in some heavier city builders.
  • Fog clearing feels rewarding 🔍 - Compared to Whiteout Survival, the exploration here gives you a steady stream of small discoveries, and that keeps the game from feeling like pure waiting.

cons

  • Timers slow things down ⏳ - Once your base grows, upgrades take hours, and the pace drops hard, which is the same trap State of Survival falls into.
  • Pushes the shop 🛒 - The game keeps showing bundles and speed-up offers, and it gets annoying when all you want is to play.
  • Shallow late game 📉 - After the early excitement, combat and management start to repeat, and there is not enough new content to keep it fresh for months.
