Sam's Club: Shopping & Savings is essentially the official mobile companion for anyone with a Sam's Club membership. It's a warehouse club app, sitting in the same category as other big-box retailer apps, but it's built to make the in-store experience a little less chaotic. You use it to scan items as you shop, check prices, and access your digital membership card. For a regular user, the main reason to grab it from the Google Play or App Store is to skip the physical card and speed up checkout. The first time you open it, you're greeted with a straightforward login screen—it's not flashy, but it gets the job done. The app has millions of downloads and is free to install, though you do need a paid membership to get any real use out of it. There is some in-app purchasing for things like delivery orders, but the core shopping tool doesn't push ads in your face, which I appreciated.
Once you're past the login, the interface feels clean but a bit dense. The home screen shows weekly deals, local club info, and a search bar at the top. The standout feature for me was the Scan & Go function. You just tap that icon, point your camera at a barcode, and the item pops up with the price. You can keep adding stuff to your digital cart as you walk around. When you're done, you pay through the app and show the receipt on your phone at the exit. It's smooth most of the time, but the camera can lag a little if the lighting in the store is dim. I also found that the search function for specific products isn't super accurate—typing “organic milk” gave me more snack items than actual milk. A nice tip: you can create a shopping list in the app before you head to the store, which saves you from wandering aimlessly. The onboarding process is quick: just log in, and the app basically says “start scanning.” There's no tutorial overload, which is refreshing, but it might leave new users guessing about where the membership card is stored.
After using this for a few weeks, I'd say it's a solid tool for anyone who shops at Sam's Club regularly, especially if you hate waiting in long checkout lines. It's not for people who only go once a month—you probably won't remember to use it. Compared to something like the Costco app, Sam's Club's version feels more integrated into the actual shopping process. Costco's app is more about browsing deals and managing membership, but it doesn't let you scan and pay from your phone. That Scan & Go feature alone makes this app feel more modern. Still, there are quirks. Sometimes the app signs you out randomly, and you have to log back in, which is annoying when you're in the middle of scanning. I ended up keeping it installed because it genuinely cuts trip time in half, but I wouldn't miss it if I switched memberships.
features
- 🛒 Scan & Go – The biggest draw is scanning items with your phone as you shop and paying through the app. No standing in the checkout line. Other apps like the Target app have a scan feature, but Target only uses it for price checks, not full payment.
- 📱 Digital Membership Card – You can pull up your membership barcode right on the screen. No need to carry the plastic card. The Walmart app doesn't even offer this for Sam's Club, so it's a membership-specific perk.
- 📦 Delivery and Curbside Pickup – The app lets you shop online for same-day delivery or pickup. It's not as seamless as Instacart in terms of item variety, but for Sam's Club items, it works well enough. The curbside option is smooth—you check in when you arrive.
- 💰 Savings and Coupons – Weekly deals are highlighted on the home screen, and the app lets you clip digital coupons. It's not as aggressive as the Kroger app with personalized coupons, but the clarity of the savings is decent.
pros
- ✅ Speed at checkout – The Scan & Go function easily beats the self-checkout lines at Costco. You pay in the app and walk out. Costco doesn't have a comparable feature yet.
- ✅ Item-level price clarity – You see the exact price per unit when scanning. The BJ's Wholesale app shows prices too, but Sam's Club's layout is easier to read during a crowded shopping trip.
- ✅ No physical card needed – It's one less thing to lose. The Kroger app requires a loyalty card, but it's not as tightly tied to the membership as Sam's Club's setup.
cons
- ❌ Random logouts – The app frequently signs you out without warning. This is a pain when you're halfway through scanning. Costco's app doesn't have this issue as often.
- ❌ Limited product search – Typing a generic item name often shows unrelated results. The Walmart app's search is more accurate and faster.
- ❌ No offline mode – Scan & Go requires a strong internet connection. If the store's WiFi is weak, the app lags. The Target app handles offline browsing a bit better.
