I stumbled upon 16Personalities a few years back when a friend kept referencing their four-letter personality type. It's essentially a personality test app, heavily inspired by the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator but presented in a much more modern, accessible way. You answer a bunch of questions, and it spits out your type—like INFJ or ENTP—with a detailed profile. The app itself is the mobile version of their wildly popular website. I downloaded it from the App Store because I wanted the convenience of taking the test on my phone without having to bookmark a webpage. My first impression after launching it was pretty positive; the interface is clean, with a calming color palette and a very non-clinical feel. It's free to download, but you do have to create a free account to save your results. There aren't any annoying banner ads, but they do push their premium "Premium Profiles" after you get your results.
The hands-on experience is mostly centered around that initial questionnaire. You answer a series of statements on a five-point scale, from "Strongly Disagree" to "Strongly Agree." The sliders feel satisfying to use, and the test doesn't drag on forever—it usually takes me about 10-12 minutes. After finishing, you get your type, a percentage breakdown for each of the four traits (like Introvert vs. Extravert), and a lengthy description. The app itself is pretty simple; there's no onboarding tutorial. You just jump in. A small practical tip: make sure you're in a quiet place because the questions require a bit of honest self-reflection. The navigation is straightforward, moving between your profile, a "Growth" section with tips, and a community tab where you can read about other types. The only mildly confusing moment is understanding how your type arrows indicate "stress" versus "growth" paths, which isn't explained clearly at first.
After using the app for a while, I think it's a fantastic self-discovery tool for people who are curious about psychology or just want a framework to understand their own quirks. Someone who enjoys taking online quizzes or exploring their identity will probably keep this app installed for months. However, if you're a skeptic who finds these tests reductive, you'll likely uninstall it after getting your result, which is what I almost did. What makes it stand out from straight-up MBTI apps is its modern branding and the community features, but it's less rigorous than a scientific Big Five personality test. I kept it installed not for the test itself, but for the "Premium Profiles" that dive deeper into career paths and relationships for my type. Still, after a month, I rarely open it unless I'm procrastinating by reading about how an INTJ handles conflict. It's a nice novelty, but not a daily driver for me.
features
- 🧩 The personality analysis is shockingly detailed. Unlike apps like Truity that just give you a result and a brief summary, 16Personalities builds a whole narrative around your type. You get sections on your strengths and weaknesses, romantic relationships, friendships, parenthood, and career paths. It makes you feel like your type is a fully fleshed-out character in a book, which is both fascinating and very easy to get lost in for an hour.
- 🧩 The community aspect is a standout feature. You can see what other people of your type are saying, which is actually quite validating. For example, as an INFJ, reading about other INFJs struggling with the same social situations makes you feel less alone. Other apps, like the official MBTI app, don't offer this kind of social proof on the same scale.
- 🧩 The "Growth" section offers practical, actionable tips tailored to your type. Instead of generic advice like "be more confident," it gives you specific strategies like "Your natural empathy is a strength, but you need to set firm boundaries." This feels much more useful than the vague horoscopes found in apps like Co-Star.
pros
- 👍 The UI is incredibly clean and relaxing. Compared to the clunky, text-heavy design of Personality Hacker, 16Personalities uses calming colors, smooth animations, and a very intuitive flow. It doesn't feel like a clinical test; it feels like a modern app you'd actually want to use.
- 👍 The introduction to personality types is beginner-friendly. It breaks down complex psychological concepts like "Cognitive Functions" into simple, digestible analogies. For someone new to this, it's way more accessible than the dense academic language you get on sites like Personality Junkie.
cons
- 👎 The premium paywall is aggressive. After you get your free profile, almost every interesting section—like detailed career matches or relationship dynamics—is locked behind a single, non-modular payment. Truity offers more affordable, a la carte reports for specific topics you care about.
- 👎 The test is not scientifically rigorous. It's based on Jungian theory, which has no real scientific backing. If you want a data-driven personality assessment, something like the Big Five app is far more valid.
- 👎 The "traits" are binary. It places you as either an Introvert or an Extravert, but most people are ambiverts. This can feel overly simplistic, whereas an app like Crystal Knows offers more nuanced scores on a spectrum.
