Healthy Benefits+ is a lifestyle and financial management app designed specifically for people enrolled in certain health plans that offer OTC (over-the-counter) allowances or flex cards. I first heard about it through my insurance provider, and the main reason I downloaded it from the Google Play store was to check my remaining quarterly balance without having to log in to a desktop portal. The installation was quick and completely free with no in-app purchases that I've encountered, though you do need to register using your member ID. Upon launching it for the first time, the interface felt clean but a little corporate, like a banking app mixed with a shopping list. No ads popped up, which was a nice surprise for a free utility.

After logging in, the home screen shows your current balance and a list of eligible items. The main action here is either scanning items in a store using the barcode scanner to see if they're covered, or ordering products directly through the app. The onboarding process was straightforward — just a few prompts explaining how the OTC card works and how to use the scanner. During daily use, I found the barcode scanner to be the most useful feature; it saves you from guessing whether a specific brand of pain reliever is eligible. However, the search function can be a bit slow at times, and I noticed that some items listed as eligible in the catalog weren't actually available at my local pharmacy. A small tip: always double-check the item catalog within the app before heading to the store, as the inventory seems updated more often than the paper list.

After using Healthy Benefits+ for a few months, I think it's a solid companion for anyone who has an OTC benefit through their insurance but finds the paper lists confusing. It's not something you'll open daily — more like a once-a-month tool when you need to refill on basics like bandages or vitamins. Compared to similar apps like SingleCare or GoodRx, this one feels much more restrictive because it only works with your specific plan's allowance, but it also feels more secure since it's tied directly to your benefits. I kept it installed because it genuinely saves me time and prevents me from buying non-covered items by mistake. If you don't have a plan that supports it, though, the app is essentially useless. For its niche purpose, it does the job well, but I wouldn't expect any flashy updates or social features.

features

  • 🛒 Item Eligibility Scanner: The barcode scanner lets you check whether a specific product is covered under your OTC allowance before reaching the register. Unlike GoodRx, which focuses on prescription discounts, this feature is tailored specifically for everyday health items like aspirin or bandages.
  • 🔍 Direct Ordering Catalog: You can browse a full list of covered items and order them directly to your home with free shipping. This is way more convenient than apps like Flipp, which only show weekly ads but don't let you purchase within the app.
  • 📊 Real-Time Balance Tracking: The dashboard updates immediately after any purchase, so you always know exactly how much of your quarterly allowance is left. Most insurance portals I've used before have a 24-hour delay, making this a clear upgrade.

pros

  • ⏱ Saves Time at Checkout: Instead of fumbling with a paper list at the pharmacy, you just scan and know instantly. This feels much smoother than using CVS's app to manually check prices.
  • 💳 No Extra Fees or Ads: Unlike many free health apps that push supplements or premium subscriptions, this one stays clean and purely functional. It's refreshing compared to apps like Aaptiv that constantly upsell.
  • 📞 Customer Support Integration: The app has a direct chat and call button for benefits questions. Most insurance apps force you to search through a website, so this is a nice little time-saver.

cons

  • ⚠️ Limited to Specific Plans: If your insurance doesn't offer an OTC benefit, the app shows an error screen. It's useless for a general audience, unlike GoodRx which works for anyone.
  • 🐢 Slow Search Lag: The item search function takes 3-5 seconds to load results, which feels sluggish when you're standing in a store aisle. Walmart's app is much snappier for price checks.
  • 🔄 No Refund Tracking: If you return an item, the balance update can take days to reflect in the app. This is frustrating compared to SingleCare, where refunds sync almost instantly.
