Firefox Fast & Private Browser is Mozilla's mobile take on the well-known desktop browser, built for people who want a more private and customizable web experience on their phone. You can download it for free from the Google Play Store and Apple's App Store, and it's been installed over 100 million times on Android alone. The moment you launch the app, there's no forced account registration or paywall, which is refreshing. Your first impression is a clean, simple homepage with a search bar and a few shortcut tiles, and it immediately feels less cluttered than Chrome or Samsung Internet. What stands out right away is the default tracking protection, which doesn't just claim to block ads and trackers but visibly shows you how many it has stopped with a little shield icon in the address bar.
When you actually start using it, the experience is mostly smooth. The onboarding process is quick, letting you import bookmarks or set Firefox as your default browser in a couple of taps. Browsing feels fast, and pages load without the usual barrage of cookie popups or animated ads. The main actions, like opening a new tab, switching between tabs, or using the private browsing mode, are all straightforward because the layout is quite similar to other mobile browsers. One practical tip I picked up is that you can long-press the tab switcher button to quickly close all tabs. A small moment that stood out was how the search bar doubles as a URL bar, but it automatically uses a private search engine like DuckDuckGo if you're in private mode, which is a nice touch for privacy-conscious users without extra steps.
After using it for a while, I think Firefox does a solid job for a specific type of user. If you're someone who values privacy over convenience, or if you hate ads interrupting your reading, this browser is a keeper. But if you live inside Google's ecosystem and rely heavily on Chrome's password manager or casting features, you might find the switch frustrating. Compared to Brave, Firefox isn't as aggressive with ad blocking out of the box, but it feels more polished and stable. Compared to Chrome, it's clearly better for blocking trackers. What keeps me from uninstalling it is the customization, you can add extensions like uBlock Origin on Android, which is rare for mobile browsers. But I could see someone ditching it if they just want a browser that “works” without thinking about privacy settings.
features
- 🔒 Enhanced Tracking Protection blocks trackers, ads, and cryptominers by default, and you can actually see a real-time count of blocked items. Chrome offers something similar, but it's hidden in settings and less comprehensive.
- 🧩 Add-on support on mobile, including uBlock Origin, NoScript, and Dark Reader. No other major mobile browser except Firefox gives you this level of extension control, while Safari only offers limited ones.
- 📖 Synced tabs and bookmarks across devices via Firefox Account. You can even send open tabs from your phone to your desktop. Chrome does this too, but Firefox's sync is more privacy-respecting because it's end-to-end encrypted.
- 🔐 Total Cookie Protection isolates cookies per website, preventing cross-site tracking. This is more advanced than Safari's Intelligent Tracking Prevention and miles ahead of Chrome's default behavior.
pros
- 🛡️ Better default privacy than Chrome or Samsung Internet. Firefox starts blocking trackers right after installation without tweaking any settings, which is a big win for casual users who never open settings.
- 🌐 More customization than Brave. While Brave locks you into its own ad-replacement system, Firefox lets you install any extension and change the toolbar layout, making it feel more personal.
- 📲 Lighter on storage compared to Chrome. Firefox takes up less space and stores less cached data, which helps on phones with limited internal memory.
cons
- 🐌 Slower than Chrome or Brave on some JavaScript-heavy sites. Firefox occasionally lags behind in rendering speed, especially on older devices, which can get annoying when you're in a hurry.
- 📱 Fewer features than Samsung Internet. Samsung's browser has a built-in video assistant, smart pop-up blocking, and easier night mode, while Firefox lacks these conveniences.
- ⚠️ Less smooth scrolling than Safari on iOS. The Firefox app on iPhone doesn't feel as fluid as Apple's own browser, because iOS forces all browsers to use WebKit, limiting performance optimization.
- 🔋 Higher battery drain on Android compared to Bromite or Kiwi Browser. Firefox seems to use more power in the background, especially when multiple tabs are open.
