Translate by Office Lens is a handy translation and scanning tool that lives on your phone. It tries to be your one-stop shop for turning text from one language into another, especially when you're dealing with physical documents, signs, or menus. You download it, open it up, and the first thing you see is a big camera viewfinder, which immediately tells you this is built around visual translation. The app has been installed a decent number of times on Google Play, and it's free to download and use, though I eventually noticed some ads popping up after a few scans. The initial impression is that it feels very much like a stripped-down version of Microsoft Lens, which makes sense given the branding, but aimed more specifically at travelers or people who need quick, on-the-go text extraction.

After tapping the capture button, the app scans whatever text is in the frame and then lets you highlight a section or just translate the whole thing. The interface is pretty straightforward, there's a mode where you point your camera at a menu and it overlays the translation in real time, which is the cool part. But actually using it day-to-day, I found it a little hit or miss. The real-time AR translation works smoothly in good lighting on clean text like a restaurant menu or a sign, but the second you try it on a crumpled receipt or a glossy magazine, it stumbles and misreads words. The onboarding is quick, no account needed, just point and shoot. The app offers options to save your translations or export them as a PDF, which I tried once but the formatting was a bit messy. A small tip I learned is that tapping on the translated text lets you copy it, which is convenient for pasting into notes or messages.

After spending some real time with it, I think this app is great for casual travelers or students who need to decipher foreign labels or notices quickly without typing everything out. But if you're someone who deals with complex documents or needs near-perfect OCR, you'll probably get annoyed by the occasional misreads and the ads. Compared to dedicated apps like Google Lens, which also translates and scans but feels more polished and responsive, Office Lens Translate feels a bit clunky. It's fine for a quick look, but I'd uninstall it once my trip was over because the free version with ads and the occasional freeze just doesn't make it a keeper for daily use at home.

features

  • 📸 The app lets you translate text from images and camera captures very quickly. Point at a sign or a document page, and it translates without needing internet in some cases, which is better than Google Translate's image mode because it works offline for basic tasks.
  • 📄 You can export translated text directly into a PDF file. This is a standout feature because most similar apps, like iTranslate or Microsoft Translator, don't give you a clean PDF export with the original and translated text side by side, which is useful for work or study.
  • 🗣️ It supports real-time conversation translation by tapping the microphone. Compared to SayHi or Google's conversation mode, this app keeps the interface simpler with fewer buttons, making it easier for someone who just wants to talk and read the reply without navigating menus.
  • 🔍 The OCR can extract text from images and then translate it, but also lets you copy the original text separately. Unlike many competitors that force you to see only the translation, this gives you both versions, which is handy for language learning.

pros

  • 👍 The offline translation works pretty reliably even in places with no signal. Google Translate needs you to download language packs too, but Office Lens packs a decent set right out of the box without extra downloads for common languages.
  • 👍 The camera scanning is very fast and responsive compared to apps like Papago or iTranslate. You don't wait long for the text to be recognized, and the real-time overlay is smooth on mid-range phones.
  • 👍 The app doesn't require you to sign in or create an account. Microsoft Translator and many others push you to log in, but this one just lets you start translating instantly, which I really appreciate.

cons

  • 👎 The free version has ads that pop up after almost every third scan. Google Lens doesn't have ads at all, and even Microsoft Translator is cleaner in this regard. It annoys me enough to consider uninstalling.
  • 👎 The OCR accuracy drops badly on poor quality images or styled fonts. Apps like Adobe Scan or Google Lens handle complex layouts and fancy fonts much better without misreading common words.
  • 👎 The PDF export often scrambles the layout, putting text in weird places. Compared to Office Lens (the original scanning app), the PDF output here feels half-baked and not suitable for formal use.
  • 👎 The conversation translation mode feels laggy and sometimes cuts off before you finish speaking. Google's Interpreter mode or even Microsoft's own Translator are smoother and more natural for two-way chats.
