I downloaded Calendar by Calendar Date a few weeks ago, mostly out of curiosity after seeing it had decent install numbers on Google Play and the App Store. To be honest, the first thing I noticed was how clean and uncluttered the interface felt right after launch. It's a standalone calendar app, not bundled with a to-do list or heavy project management tools. The main draw is simplicity. You open it, and there's just a straightforward monthly view and a list of your events right there. I didn't have to create an account or sign up for anything, which I really appreciated. It's basically a direct replacement for the stock calendar on your phone, but with a few extra themes and little customization options. The install size is small, it's free to download, and while there are some optional in-app purchases for premium themes, I haven't felt pressured to buy anything so far.

Getting started was immediate. I didn't need a tutorial or anything. The app pulled in all my existing Google Calendar events without a hitch, which was a relief because syncing issues are a common pain with lesser-known calendar apps. The day-to-day experience is smooth. I tap a date to add an event, set a time, maybe a reminder, and I'm done. The swipe gestures to move between months and weeks feel responsive. One small thing I liked is that it highlights the current day clearly, and you can resize the date grid, which helps if your schedule is packed. I did notice the app isn't as snappy when you have hundreds of recurring events loaded, but it's still usable. There's no built-in weather view or task manager, which some people might miss, but for just managing appointments, it gets out of your way.

After a month of using it, I think this app works best for someone who just wants a reliable, no-fuss calendar. My mom would probably love it. But if you're someone who lives inside your calendar — adding notes, attaching files, color-coding every little thing — this might feel too barebones. Compared to Google Calendar, it lacks the deep integration with Gmail and reminders, but the advantage is it doesn't feel like a corporate tool. It feels more like a personal day planner. I might keep it installed on my secondary phone because it's lightweight and doesn't nag me with ads. But I can also see myself uninstalling it if I ever need the collaboration features found in Calendar 366 or Fantastical. For a simple app that does one thing well, it's a solid choice.

features

  • 🎯 Smart parsing of event titles: When I type 'Coffee with Jane at 3pm next Tuesday', the app instantly recognizes the date, time, and description for me. Google Calendar does this too, but Calendar by Calendar Date seems a bit quicker with casual phrasing like 'lunch tomorrow' instead of requiring specific formats. It saves a few taps each time you add a new event.
  • 🎯 Built-in reminder options without needing internet: Unlike some apps that rely on push notifications and background services, this app lets you set local reminders that work even when I have spotty data coverage. The alarm is reliable and doesn't get lost in notification hell like some other free calendar apps do.
  • 🎯 Customizable starting day of the week: This sounds minor, but many free calendar apps lock you into Monday start or don't let you switch easily. Here, I can pick Monday, Sunday, or Saturday as the first day of the week from the settings, which is great if you live in a region where schedules are built around a different workflow. Apple Calendar has this, but the switcher is hidden deeper in the system settings.
  • 🎯 Lightweight design with no extra fluff: The entire app is around 10 megabytes. It doesn't try to be a productivity suite. You don't get a habit tracker, notes, or weather widgets. It just shows your calendar. For someone who already uses separate apps like TickTick for tasks or a weather widget, that focus is a strength.

pros

  • ✅ Absolutely free with no ads: That's rare these days. Even apps like Simple Calendar or Etar eventually throw in a full-screen ad or nag you for a pro version. Calendar by Calendar Date has a tiny banner at the bottom sometimes, but it's barely noticeable. I haven't seen a single pop-up video ad yet.
  • ✅ Great offline support: Google Calendar is completely useless without an internet connection for editing events. This app lets you create, edit, and delete events even when you're underground or on a plane. It syncs everything later once you're back online, which is pretty reassuring during travel.
  • ✅ Quick week number display: I work in a role where week numbers matter for project planning (ISO week numbers are standard here). The app lets you toggle week numbers on the left side of the month view. Most free calendar apps hide this behind a paid upgrade, or they don't offer it at all. It's a small detail but very welcome.

cons

  • ❌ No natural language for repeating events: I can say 'meeting every Monday', but I can't say 'meeting every 2 weeks on Monday'. For recurring events with intervals, I have to manually open the advanced settings and set a custom recurrence. Google Calendar and Fantastical handle this much more intuitively.
  • ❌ Sharing events is clunky: Exporting an event through email or another app takes several taps, and it often sends plain text instead of an iCal file. Calendar 366 or Outlook for iOS lets you share an .ics file with one tap. That's a big miss if you collaborate often.
  • ❌ No smart calendar suggestions: Apps like Calendly or Google Calendar on desktop can detect flight confirmations in your email and suggest adding them. This app does none of that. It's purely manual input. If you rely on automated event creation from emails, you'll be disappointed.
  • ❌ Sync conflicts can happen: While the initial sync with Google Calendar works fine, I've noticed duplicate events appearing if I edit an event on both my computer and the app around the same time. Deleting duplicates manually is annoying. Services like Exchange or iCloud sync handle conflicts more gracefully.
