So myChevrolet is basically GM's official companion app for Chevy owners. It's one of those vehicle management apps, like what FordPass is for Ford or MySubaru for Subaru folks. You mainly use it to remotely start your car, lock or unlock doors, check your fuel level or tire pressure, and schedule service at a dealership. The whole reason someone downloads it is pretty straightforward — if you own a Chevy, you kind of need it to get the most out of the car's connected features. First time you open it, the app asks you to sign in with your GM account and then register your vehicle using either the VIN or a QR code from the car's infotainment screen. It's a bit clunky at first because the setup isn't super smooth, but once you get past that, the main dashboard shows up with your car's status at a glance. The app is free to download, but some features, like remote start or locate my car, require an active OnStar subscription, which is a separate paid plan. There are no random in-app purchases or intrusive ads, which is nice.
After you get through the initial pairing, the real experience depends a lot on your car's model and whether you've paid for OnStar. For daily use, the most common thing I do is remote start. I'll open the app, hit the big "Start" button on the home screen, and then wait... sometimes it takes 10 seconds, sometimes 30. It's not instant, and there have been mornings where I'm standing outside tapping my phone and the car just sits there. That's frustrating. The interface itself looks modern enough, with a dark theme and big icons, but navigating between tabs can feel a bit slow. The "Vehicle Status" section is handy — it shows fuel range, oil life, and tire pressure. I noticed if you leave the app open in the background, it won't refresh automatically; you have to pull down to refresh manually, which is a small but annoying thing. Setting up a service appointment through the app is actually pretty easy — it shows nearby dealers, available times, and you can book it right there. One tip: make sure your car's WiFi or cellular connection is good, because the app relies on that, not Bluetooth, for most commands.
After using it for a few months, I think it's a mixed bag. If you're someone who likes keeping an eye on your car's health and actually uses the remote features, it's useful enough to keep installed. But if your car is older or doesn't have an active OnStar plan, the app becomes basically just a digital owner's manual and a service scheduler, which feels underwhelming. Compared to Tesla's app, which is lightning-fast and does everything via Bluetooth, myChevrolet feels slow and dated. The big difference is that GM ties the best features behind a subscription, while Tesla gives you full control for free. Who would keep it? Probably someone who has a newer Chevy and already pays for OnStar. Who would uninstall it? Anyone who realizes the free version doesn't do much, or gets annoyed by the laggy remote start. It's fine for what it is, but it's not a must-have app unless you're already paying for the service.
features
- 🔑 Remote Key Fob Features: You can lock, unlock, remote start, and even activate the horn or lights straight from your phone. Compared to Hyundai's Blue Link app, the response time here is noticeably slower. But the range is technically unlimited as long as your car has cellular service, which is a real plus if you park far away.
- 📍 Vehicle Locator: Forgot where you parked? The app shows your car's location on a map. This works well in crowded parking lots. However, unlike Tesla's app which updates live, myChevrolet's location can lag by a minute or two, so don't trust it 100% if you're walking around.
- 🔔 Smart Alerts: You can set up notifications for things like low tire pressure, oil life, or if the alarm goes off. It's useful for peace of mind. The standout part is that it sends alerts even when the app is closed, which not all car apps do. But the notification settings are buried in the menu, so most people never find them.
pros
- ✅ Free Basic Monitoring: Even without paying for OnStar, you can still check your fuel level, oil life, and tire pressure. That's more than what FordPass gives you for free, which is a nice bonus for budget-conscious owners.
- ✅ Dealership Integration: Booking service through the app is seamless. It shows real-time availability and lets you pick a time slot. Other apps like Subaru's Starlink make you call the dealer separately, so this is a clear win.
- ✅ Simple Dashboard Layout: The main screen shows exactly what you need at a glance — range, fuel, and next service. It's not cluttered with ads or unnecessary social features, unlike some aftermarket car apps.
cons
- ❌ Slow Command Execution: Remote start and lock commands take way longer than competitors. My friend's Kia Access app locks her car in 5 seconds, while myChevrolet often takes 20 seconds or just times out. It makes the app feel unreliable.
- ❌ Heavy OnStar Dependency: Almost every useful feature requires a subscription. Without it, you're basically left with just the manual and service scheduler. Compare that to NissanConnect, which gives some remote features for free for the first few years.
- ❌ Occasional Login Issues: The app sometimes logs you out randomly or fails to recognize your account. I've had to re-enter my password at the worst moments, like when I was running late and just wanted to start the car. That shouldn't happen in 2024.
