I picked up Blossom - Plant Identifier from the Google Play Store a few weeks back, mostly out of curiosity. It's one of those plant recognition apps that uses your phone's camera to tell you what a plant is, and it also gives care reminders and a bit of gardening advice. I've got a few houseplants that I've been keeping alive by pure luck, so I figured this might help me stop accidentally drowning my snake plant. After downloading it for free and launching it, the first impression was honestly pretty good. The onboarding screen is clean, with a short tutorial that doesn't feel like homework. They push a subscription pretty quickly though, which is a bit off-putting for a free download, but you can still use the basic recognition without paying. It had a solid number of installs, so I figured it couldn't be a total dud.
The hands-on experience is where the app either clicks or doesn't for most people. Opening it up, you're greeted with a camera button front and center, so the main action is obvious: point, tap, and wait for Blossom to spit out a match. On my first try, I snapped a picture of a leggy pothos, and it came back with 'Epipremnum aureum' in maybe five seconds. That felt satisfying. The interface is fairly clean, but after a few scans, I noticed the app sometimes asks you to take a second photo if the first one is blurry or the lighting is bad. That's a bit annoying if you're just walking through a park and trying to ID a tree. The care reminders section is neat, letting you add your plants and set watering schedules, but I found it a bit clunky to add multiple plants at once. There's a discovery feed too, with articles, but it's mostly fluff that feels like it came from a generic content farm. One tip I picked up: tap the leaf icon on the result screen to toggle between common names and scientific names, which is handy for showing off at parties.
After using Blossom for a solid two weeks, I've got mixed feelings. For a casual plant owner who just wants to know what that weird green thing in their office is, this app does the job fine. The scan accuracy is decent for common houseplants and garden flowers, though it stumbles on rarer species or heavily shaded photos. But here's the thing: there are other apps like PictureThis and PlantNet that do the same thing with similar or better accuracy, and Blossom's subscription nagging gets old fast. What keeps it on my phone is the design. It's just nicer to look at than the clunky interface of PlantNet, and the care reminders actually help me not kill my aloe vera. That said, if you're a serious gardener who needs precise disease diagnostics or extensive botanical information, this app might feel shallow. I'll probably keep it installed for the reminders, but I'm not paying for the premium tier when PictureThis offers a better free trial.
features
- 🌿 Instant plant recognition with a solid library of common species. The camera scan is fast and usually accurate for houseplants, though it struggles on rarer variants. PictureThis offers a similar feature but often gives more detailed species info after scanning.
- 🌿 Custom care reminders that let you input plant names and set watering schedules. You can add notes about soil type or sunlight, which is handy for keeping track of multiple plants. PlantNet lacks this feature entirely, so Blossom wins here for casual plant parents.
- 🌿 A visual discovery feed with articles and tips, though the content is fairly generic and not very deep. It's okay for browsing, but don't expect expert-level advice. Other apps like PictureThis have richer educational content in their premium tiers.
pros
- ✅ Clean and modern interface that's pleasant to navigate. Blossom feels more polished compared to PlantNet, which has a more utilitarian and dated design that can be off-putting at first glance.
- ✅ Fast scan times for common plants with decent accuracy in good lighting. This app is great for quick ID checks when you're out on a walk or in a nursery, giving results in under five seconds most of the time.
- ✅ Built-in care reminders that actually work well for casual users. You don't need to be a botany nerd to use this feature, unlike some other apps that bury it behind menus or require paid subscriptions.
cons
- ❌ Heavy push for a subscription right after the first scan. The free version feels very limited, with the premium tier gating features like disease diagnosis and unlimited scans, which is frustrating compared to PictureThis that offers a more generous free trial.
- ❌ Inconsistent scan accuracy for rarer plants or poor lighting conditions. The app often asks for retakes or gives vague results like 'similar to...', while PlantNet tends to handle edge cases better with its community-backed database.
- ❌ The discovery feed is full of generic, filler content that doesn't add much value. It feels like automated articles rather than expert advice, which makes it easy to ignore. Apps like PictureThis have more curated and useful educational material.
