Accupedo is a step tracker app that uses your phone's built-in accelerometer to count steps, instead of relying on GPS. It falls under the health and fitness category, and the main idea is that you can just toss your phone in your pocket or bag and let it do the counting. I downloaded it from the Google Play Store because I wanted something that wouldn't eat up my battery like map-based running apps do. It claims over 10 million installs and is free to download, though there are optional in-app purchases and ads. After launching it for the first time, the interface felt a bit dated with a pro-looking dashboard, but it asked for my height and weight right away, which I liked because that's supposed to help with distance and calorie estimates. No mandatory registration, which is always a win in my book.
Once I started using it, I found the onboarding pretty straightforward. The main screen shows a big step count number, distance, calories, and active time. Sliding sideways takes you to a daily graph, a weekly chart, or a full history. I just kept my phone in my jeans pocket, and every few minutes, the count would tick up. One small thing that caught me off guard was that the app sometimes pauses counting if the phone is lying flat on a table for a while—that's because it only detects motion when the device is actually moving with you. A practical tip: if you have a flip belt or armband, it works better than a loose pocket because the sensor stays stable. The app also automatically logs a rough path of where you walked using basic GPS points, but it's not super precise. For a normal day, I would open it once in the morning and check the hourly breakdown at night.
After using it for about two weeks, I think Accupedo is fine for people who just want a rough idea of daily step totals without wearing a wristband. But if you're a data nerd who wants exact pace splits or route details, this won't cut it. It reminds me of Google Fit, but the difference is that Accupedo focuses solely on steps and doesn't try to track sleep or heart rate. The calorie estimate seems a bit generous compared to my Fitbit, but I can't prove it. I will probably keep it installed because it works in the background without me thinking about it, though the constant ads in the free version are annoying. I can see someone uninstalling it if they already use a dedicated fitness tracker or if they want better GPS mapping. Overall, it's a simple tool that does one thing decently, but don't expect it to replace a proper health ecosystem.
features
- 🔄 Step detection via accelerometer only, no GPS needed for the main count. This saves battery big time compared to Google Fit's combined GPS and sensor tracking, which can drain my phone by lunch.
- 📅 Daily, weekly, monthly views in a clean table format. Unlike Samsung Health, which buries stats under tabs, Accupedo lets me tap one button to see my average steps for the past month without digging through menus.
- 📉 Hourly breakdown chart that shows exactly when I was inactive. That's a standout for me because apps like Step Tracker just give a total number, but Accupedo shows that I sit still for two hours straight after lunch.
- 🚫 Offline logging with no internet requirement for step data. It syncs later if you want, but unlike Pedometer++ that sometimes delays counts when offline, Accupedo stores everything locally and never loses a step.
pros
- 🔋 Extremely low battery usage because it only checks the accelerometer every few seconds, not constantly. Google Fit's constant sensor polling drains my phone by 30% more in a day, but Accupedo barely registers in the battery stats.
- 💪 No need for a wearable device. While Fitbit needs a physical band or requires the phone to be open, Accupedo works silently in my bag or pocket without any extra hardware.
- 📊 Simple and untrimmed interface compared to StepsApp that has too many glossy graphs and social features. Accupedo feels like a no-nonsense tool that just shows numbers without trying to be Instagram.
cons
- 🔊 No automatic calibration for stride length. Google Fit adjusts based on your height and walking patterns, but Accupedo uses a fixed calculation that makes distance estimates less accurate for people who walk slowly or fast.
- 🚫 Weak GPS tracking for route visualization. Strava's path mapping is smooth and detailed, whereas Accupedo's plotted route is just a few jagged lines that never show streets or precise turns.
- 📡 No integration with other health apps like Apple Health or MyFitnessPal. If you want to sync calories or weight data, you're stuck with the app's internal records, unlike Pacer that connects to multiple platforms.
