I first stumbled across StyleLab: AI Clothes Try On on the Google Play Store a couple weeks ago when I was cleaning out my closet and trying to decide what to keep. It's an augmented reality fashion app built around letting you preview how clothes might look on your own body without actually having to put them on. After downloading it for free, I was a little skeptical about an app that claims to work as a virtual fitting room, and honestly, the first impression was mixed. The welcome screen is fairly clean and the install count seems decent, but right away I noticed a handful of in-app purchase options and ad placements scattered around the bottom of the interface. It's not a full-on subscription trap by any means, but there's definitely a push to upgrade pretty quickly if you want to play around with more than just a couple basic outfits.
Once I got past the initial setup, the core experience is actually kind of impressive for what it is. You start by uploading a full-body photo of yourself, wearing something form-fitting so the AI can map your silhouette correctly. Then you're shown a pretty large catalog of tops, bottoms, dresses, and outerwear that you can "try on" by tap to select. The AI blends the item onto your photo, adjusting for lighting and pose, and it genuinely looks convincing most of the time. The interface flow is fairly straightforward, but I did hit a couple slightly laggy moments when switching between items. The onboarding tutorial is short, which I actually prefer, and within two minutes I was already mixing and matching. I learned pretty quickly that brighter backgrounds give way better results and that photos taken with a friend rather than a selfie stick help the AI catch the clothing edges more cleanly.
After using it for a handful of sessions, I think the app nails the novelty factor but falls short on utility for daily wardrobe decisions. It's a fun tool if you're shopping online and want to see how a certain color or cut might work with your body type, and I could see it being genuinely helpful for people who are indecisive about ordering clothes from unfamiliar brands. But it doesn't yet replace actually feeling the fabric or checking the fit against your real proportions. Compared to something like the virtual try-on features inside big retail apps, StyleLab feels more focused but also more limited in terms of brand integration. It's a keeper for occasional outfit brainstorming, but I can also picture most people uninstalling it after a couple weeks once the "try everything" novelty fades away.
features
- 🔹 The standout feature here is definitely the live preview that lets you overlay new clothes onto your own uploaded photo. Unlike ZARA's virtual try-on, which mostly works with their specific collection, StyleLab gives you a general wardrobe builder where the AI actually edits the texture and shading of the garment to match your image's lighting. The accuracy is decent enough to make shopping decisions less risky.
- 🔹 Another thing that caught my attention is the body mapping calibration. You simply snap a picture in fitted clothing, and the app detects your shoulders, waist, and hips automatically. Similar tools in websites like ASOS rely heavily on manual measurements, but StyleLab handles most of that process for you.
- 🔹 The outfit mixing mode lets you combine separate tops and bottoms from different sets, which is something you don't often see in dedicated retail apps. It makes the experience feel more like playing a styling game rather than just browsing a catalog.
pros
- 😊 One major strength is how lightweight the app feels on older phones. It doesn't drain battery or heat up the device the way some full AR apps like IKEA Place do. You can try on twenty outfits in a row without performance drops.
- 😊 The library of free items is actually larger than I expected for a free-to-start app. Some comparable apps like YouCam Perfect lock the majority of content behind a premium tier, but here you get around forty basic items to play with before hitting the paywall.
- 😊 The sharing options are also well thought out. You can export a side-by-side comparison of different looks directly to Instagram or WhatsApp without any watermark, which is rare among similar closet organizer apps.
cons
- 😞 The biggest pain point is the ad frequency, especially when you're just trying to browse the catalog. Every three or four selections trigger a full-screen video ad, and it breaks the flow. Apps like Samsung's virtual try-on have no ads at all.
- 😞 Another limitation is the lack of real-time camera preview. Unlike Wanna Kicks which lets you point your camera at your feet and see sneakers instantly, StyleLab only works with uploaded photos, so spontaneity is out the window.
- 😞 The catalog itself feels a bit generic and dated. Most of the items resemble fast fashion basics rather than trending pieces, so if you're into specific brands or unique styles, you'll feel restricted pretty quickly.
- 😞 Finally, the removal process for tried-on clothes could be smoother. Sometimes the AI leaves ghost edges around the neckline if you switch items too fast, and there's no quick "reset" button to start fresh without uploading a whole new photo.
