I stumbled upon Quiz Challenge: Funny Filter on the Google Play Store last week while looking for something to kill time on the bus. It's a casual puzzle game that blends the classic quiz format with those goofy camera filters you see in messaging apps. Basically, you answer trivia questions, but instead of just getting a score, the app reacts by slapping a random silly filter on your face through your phone's camera. The core concept is pretty straightforward – test your knowledge, get a laugh out of the distorted selfie. After downloading it (it's free, with occasional ads), I launched it and was greeted by a very colorful but slightly cluttered home screen. It immediately asked for camera permissions, which felt a bit forward for a first impression, but that's the gimmick so you have to allow it. You don't need to register an account to play, which was a relief. I saw installs were around a hundred thousand, so it's not huge but has a small community.
Once you get past the permissions, the actual gameplay is pretty simple. You pick a category, like "Science" or "Movies", and then you're shown a multiple-choice question on screen. Your face appears in a small window at the top, and as soon as you pick an answer – whether it's right or wrong – a filter drops down and covers your face. It could be a silly mustache, cartoon dog ears, or some wacky eye enlarging effect. The transition is quick and the results screen shows your final face with the filter, along with the correct answer. The interface is a bit laggy on my older phone, especially during the filter animations, but not unplayable. A nice touch is that you can save these transformed selfies to your gallery, which is perfect for sharing on socials. There's also a daily challenge mode that gives a fresh set of questions each day.
After playing for a few days, I can see the appeal but also the limitations. It's fun for a quick chuckle, especially if you're with friends and want to compare your distorted faces. But the quiz questions themselves aren't particularly challenging or well-researched; they feel like generic trivia you'd find on any free quiz app. The main hook is the filters, and honestly, they're better executed in apps like Snapchat or Instagram where face tracking is smoother and has more variety. I imagine people who love sharing funny selfies but don't want a full social media app might keep this installed. For me, the novelty wore off after a week because the questions repeat too often and the filter selection isn't deep enough to hold my interest. I'll probably uninstall it soon and stick with a dedicated trivia app for brain training and keep my social filters separate.
features
- 😂 The core draw is obviously the reactive filters. When you answer correctly or incorrectly, the app overlays real-time masks like animal faces, cartoon distortions, or funny makeup. It's different from a static quiz app like Trivia Crack because the result is a shareable video or photo instead of just a scoreboard. The outstanding thing here is that the filter stays on your face for a few seconds after the answer, making it feel more interactive than a standard multiple-choice game.
- 🧠 The question library covers multiple categories, from pop culture to geography. But compared to a heavyweight like QuizUp, the depth is shallow. Each category only has about 20-30 questions, so you'll see repeats quickly. It's more about the laugh than learning anything new.
- 📸 After each round, you can instantly save or share your filtered face to social media. This makes it more like a creative tool than a pure game. Apps like Fun Face Filter might have better filters, but they don't combine it with trivia, which is the unique selling point here.
pros
- 👍 The instant reward is a huge plus. Unlike a serious quiz app like Trivia Crack where you wait for opponent turns, here you get the joke immediately after each answer. It's perfect for short bursts of fun during a break.
- 🚫 No registration is required. You can just launch and play without creating an account. This lowers the barrier compared to apps like Quizlet or Sporcle that often want an email sign-up to save progress.
- 📱 The daily challenge gives you a reason to come back, and the filters are updated every few weeks. In contrast, apps like Quizoid feel static and never change their reward system.
cons
- 😕 The filters are low-quality compared to dedicated filter apps like Snapchat. The face tracking stutters on older devices, and there's no option to manually turn the filter off if you just want to see plain results.
- 📖 Question depth is very thin. Apps like Quiz Planet offer community-made quizzes with thousands of questions, but here you'll run out of fresh content after a couple of sessions.
- 📢 Ads are intrusive. After every three questions, you get a full-screen video ad, which feels excessive. Other free quiz apps like Fun Trivia generally space their ads out more fairly.
- ❌ The camera permission requirement feels excessive for a quiz game. You can't use the app without granting access to your front camera, whereas a similar app like Quiz Night doesn't need any camera access at all.
