Monster High™ Beauty Salon is a free-to-play dress-up and makeover game from the team at CrazyLabs, available for download on both Google Play and the App Store. It's pretty much exactly what it sounds like — you style characters from the Monster High universe, doing their hair, makeup, and picking out outfits. I grabbed it after seeing a friend rave about it online, honestly just expecting a quick time-waster. The install was quick and it's free, which is always nice. My first impression when launching the app was actually a bit mixed: the art style is bright and colorful, faithful to the dolls and the franchise, but the interface felt a little cluttered right from the start. There's no forced registration, which I appreciated, but you do get hit with an optional video ad pretty early on if you want some bonus currency. Still, the main menu makes it easy to jump straight into a character makeover, so I didn't mind too much.
Once you get past the initial loading screens, the hands-on experience is where the app really shines, at least for a little while. The tutorial walks you through your first makeover step-by-step — washing hair, applying makeup, picking a dress, and adding accessories. Each step involves tapping and dragging on the screen, and it feels surprisingly tactile for a mobile game. You'll spend most of your time cycling through different haircuts, eye shadows, lip colors, and outfits for characters like Draculaura or Clawdeen. The interface is mostly smooth, though sometimes the icons for rotating an item or changing a color are a bit small and easy to miss. A tip I picked up: you can tap and hold on a color palette to preview a shade before applying it, which saves you from undoing mistakes. The game also lets you snap a photo of your final look and share it, which is a neat touch. There is a slight grind for in-game currency to unlock premium items, but you can earn enough just by completing makeovers without spending real cash.
After using Monster High™ Beauty Salon for a few days, I feel like it's a solid pick for fans of the franchise and younger players who enjoy imaginative dress-up games. The characters look great, and the makeup and hair tools are genuinely fun to use. It doesn't try to be a deep simulation like some other dress-up games — it's more of a casual, quick-play app. If you're the type who wants a lot of story or complex gameplay, this probably isn't for you. What makes it different from something like the "Dress to Impress" games is that it feels more guided and less open-ended, which can be a good or bad thing depending on your mood. I honestly kept it installed because it's a good wind-down app after a long day, but I can see someone uninstalling it after a week if they're not really into Monster High. Overall, it does what it promises, just don't expect a revolution in mobile gaming.
features
- 👗 Huge wardrobe variety: This app gives you an insane amount of outfit pieces, accessories, and hairstyles to mix and match. Compared to something like "Makeup & Dress Up: Fashion Games", Monster High™ Beauty Salon feels more curated and character-specific, which makes each look feel more cohesive rather than just random combinations.
- 💄 Realistic makeup tools: The makeup application is surprisingly detailed with layering options for eyeshadow, lipstick, blush, and even eyebrows. You can swipe on lip gloss and see it actually blend. Competitors like "Princess Makeover Salon" often have less precise controls, so this stands out for anyone wanting more control over the final look.
- 📷 Photo booth mode: After finishing a makeover, you can pose your character in a photo studio with different backgrounds, filters, and stickers. This is a nice social feature that many similar apps lack, letting you create shareable content without needing a separate editing tool.
- 🆓 Generous free content: You can earn a lot of the premium hairstyles and clothing just by playing through the makeovers daily. No need to watch endless ads. Games like "Fashion Star: Dress Up Games" lock way more behind a paywall, so this felt refreshingly accessible.
pros
- 🎨 Faithful to source material: The character designs and outfits directly reference the Monster High franchise, which fans will appreciate. Other apps like "Style Savvy" don't have this brand tie-in, so if you love the characters, this is a big plus.
- 🆙 Low barrier to entry: The tutorial is clear and you're styling within two minutes. No confusing menus or overwhelming skill trees. Compared to more complex games like "Covet Fashion", this is perfect for a younger audience or someone who just wants to relax.
- 🏆 Daily challenges keep it fresh: The game offers daily goals that reward you with currency, giving you a reason to come back. This is better than apps like "Little Big Workshop" which can feel repetitive after a few sessions.
cons
- 🔁 Repetitive gameplay loop: Once you've done a few makeovers, you've basically seen everything. The tasks don't vary much beyond the same hairstyling and makeup steps. Apps like "Fashion Diva" offer more varied mini-games to break up the monotony.
- ⚠️ Frequent ad pop-ups: While you can skip most ads, they appear between almost every stage. Compared to "Princess Salon: Newborn Baby", which has fewer interruptions, this can get annoying fast.
- 📱 Cluttered UI on smaller screens: The buttons and some selection wheels are too small to tap accurately on a phone with a smaller screen. Larger games like "Design Home" handle their interface much better on mobile.
- 💸 Cosmetic microtransactions feel overpriced: Some of the most interesting hairstyles and outfits cost real money, and they're not cheap. The free options are decent, but the premium ones are clearly pushed, which can leave a sour taste for free players.
