I first came across Lip Fall Challenge on the App Store while browsing for something silly to pass the time. It's a face filter app, basically one of those augmented reality games that uses your front camera to track your mouth movements. The main thing you do is try to keep your lips from moving when something pops up on screen, which sounds easy but gets tricky fast. After downloading it, I noticed it had over a million installs on Google Play and was free to download. There's no forced registration, which I appreciated, but there are occasional ads and in-app purchases for extra filters. Opening it for the first time felt light and casual, like one of those apps you show your friends at a party.
The interface is minimal. Once you tap play, it asks for camera permission and then throws you right into a round. The app shows a short video or animation, and you have to hold still while it scans your face. If your lips move, you fail. I found myself laughing at how ridiculous it looks when you try to stay stone-faced. The onboarding is basically nonexistent, which is fine because the concept is simple. In daily use, you just pick a challenge set, hit start, and try not to crack a smile. The controls are touch-based, mostly just tapping to start and retry. One small tip I picked up is to keep your jaw slightly dropped, it helps avoid accidental lip twitches. It's smooth most of the time, though the face tracking lagged a bit on my older phone.
After a few sessions, I think this app works best for short bursts of fun, like waiting for a bus or hanging out with friends. It's not something you'd use for hours, but for a quick laugh, it does the job. Compared to similar apps like Face Dance or even Snapchat's filter games, Lip Fall Challenge is more focused on reaction and control rather than just dancing or posing. I could see someone keeping it installed if they enjoy sharing funny face fails with others, but I personally uninstalled it after a week because it got repetitive. It's not a bad app, just a very specific kind of entertainment.
features
- 🎭 The core mechanic is simple but addictive: you hold your face still during a trigger, and the app penalizes any lip movement. Unlike Face Dance, which lets you freely move, this one punishes movement, making it a different kind of challenge.
- 📱 No account needed. You can jump straight into a game without signing up. That's a big plus compared to apps like TikTok's effects, which often push you to log in first.
- 👥 Local multiplayer mode is available. You can pass the phone around and compare scores with friends. That social aspect is something apps like Snapchat filters don't offer as directly.
- 🎨 The filter library gets regular updates with new themes. While some are locked behind paywalls, the free ones are enough to keep things fresh for a while.
pros
- 🆓 It's completely free to download and play the basic content. No upfront cost, unlike some premium face filter apps that charge a few dollars just to try them out.
- ⚡ Performance is good on mid-range devices. Even though my phone is a bit old, the face detection worked reliably, unlike some other AR apps that crash or stutter on lower specs.
- 🎉 The fail mechanic is hilarious. When you mess up, the app records a short clip, which you can save. That's better than competing apps like Face Dance, which don't always capture the funny moments automatically.
cons
- 📊 Repetition sets in fast. After about 20 rounds, the challenges start feeling the same. Apps like Face Dance have more variety with custom songs and moves.
- 📢 Ads are frequent. After every three or four rounds, you sit through a full-screen ad. It's not as intrusive as some, but it breaks the flow compared to ad-free alternatives.
- 🔒 Some good filters are locked behind in-app purchases. If you want the best themes, you have to pay, while similar apps sometimes offer more for free upfront.
- 🌐 No offline mode. You need internet to play, even for solo rounds, which is annoying compared to offline-friendly games like the basic Snapchat filters.
