This Or That Test: Fun Filter is one of those personality quiz apps that's been popping up a lot lately. It's basically a digital version of those “would you rather” games you'd play at parties. You download it from the Google Play store—it's free to install, though I can't say exactly how many downloads it has—and after launching it, you're hit with a very bright, almost neon-colored interface. The first impression is that it's trying way too hard to be playful, with cartoonish icons and a filter that looks like something from a 2010 Instagram rip-off. There's no mandatory registration, which is nice, but immediately you see the in-app purchase buttons and ads sitting at the bottom. As a normal user, you'd probably download it because you're bored on a commute, not because you expect a life-changing experience.
Once you start using it, the actual hands-on experience is more straightforward than I expected. There's a quick onboarding that shows you how to select between two options—say, “pizza” vs “burgers”—and then the app applies a filter that highlights your choice, maybe with some sparkle effects or a silly background change. I tested it by answering about 20 questions in a row. The interface is clean enough for casual tapping, but there are moments where the app stutters, especially when loading the filter preview. A small tip: you can skip the animated intro by pressing the back button, which saves a bit of time. However, the main actions are limited to swiping left or right or tapping buttons. For daily use, you'd just open it, answer a few questions, maybe share the result on social media, and then close it. It's not something you'd spend an hour on; it's more of a five-minute distraction.
After using it for a week, my personal judgment is that it's decent for what it is, but nothing special. If you're someone who loves personality quizzes and doesn't mind repetitive content, you might keep it around for a while. But if you're looking for something deeper, like a real “which movie character are you” experience, this feels shallow. Compared to apps like “Zombodroid” or “Zombie Age,” it's not even in the same league because those are actual games, not just filter-based quizzes. What sets it apart is the visual filter style—it's more about the look than the logic. I can see why someone would uninstall it after a week because the questions start repeating quickly. For me, it was fun for ten minutes, but I wouldn't recommend it as a staple app unless you're really into those quick “pick one” games.
features
- 🎭 The whole app revolves around a simple “this or that” mechanic. You pick between two items, and the filter changes your background or adds effects based on your choice. It's not rocket science, but it does what it says. Compared to “Zombodroid” which has combat levels, this app relies purely on your preferences.
- 🎭 The filter preview is the standout feature. Instead of just seeing a static result, the app animates your selection with sparkles or color shifts. It's a visual twist that other quiz apps like “Psych!” don't have. That said, it can feel gimmicky after the tenth time.
- 🎭 Social sharing is built into the core. After each set of answers, you can post the result as a video or image to platforms like Instagram. This makes it a quick content tool, unlike “Zombie Age” which keeps you inside the app. It's less about gameplay and more about generating shareable moments.
pros
- 👑 It's extremely lightweight. The app doesn't drain battery or take up much storage, unlike something like “Zombodroid” which has heavy 3D assets. You can run it on older phones without lag.
- 👑 No registration needed. You can start playing instantly without creating an account, which is rare compared to apps that demand an email or social login. This reduces friction for casual users.
- 👑 The filter effects are unique. Most similar apps, like “Psych!” or other quiz games, just show you a text result. Here, you get a visual transformation, which feels more interactive even if it's just a filter.
cons
- ⚠️ The questions repeat way too often. After just 20 picks, I saw the same “pizza vs burger” three times. Apps like “Zombodroid” have procedural generation to keep things fresh, but this app obviously has a limited question pool.
- ⚠️ Ads are intrusive. You can barely finish a round without a full-screen ad popping up, which is annoying. “Zombie Age” handles ads better by spacing them out between levels.
- ⚠️ No offline mode. If you're on a subway or in a area with spotty signal, the app struggles to load filters properly. This is a drawback compared to “Zombodroid” which works fine offline.
