ITVX is a British streaming service, the kind of app you'd grab if you want to catch up on shows from ITV, like Love Island or Coronation Street, without needing a live TV. It's a free download on both Google Play and the App Store, and while you can watch a lot of content without paying, there are ads unless you sign up for the premium subscription. After installing it, my first impression was that it felt pretty polished for a broadcaster's own app, with a dark theme and big, clear thumbnails. It didn't feel as clunky as some older catch-up services, so I was oddly relieved.

Using it day-to-day is straightforward. You open it, and there's a row of trending shows, a section for live TV, and categories like Drama or Reality. The onboarding just asks if you want to sign in or browse as a guest, which is nice if you're impatient. I tapped on a documentary, and it started playing within a few seconds, no buffering drama. The interface does have these little quirks, like the search bar hiding behind a magnifying glass icon, so I missed it at first. A neat trick is that you can swipe left on a show to add it to your watchlist, which feels more modern than digging through menus.

After a few weeks, I think ITVX is best for someone who already watches ITV shows and wants them on demand without a cable subscription. But if you're not into British telly or reality TV, it's probably not essential. Compared to BBC iPlayer, ITVX feels less buggy and has a nicer layout, though the free version's ads are more frequent than I'd like. What keeps it on my phone is that it streams live events like the Brit Awards without needing a TV license check, which is pretty handy. I could see someone uninstalling it if they only watch Netflix, but for its niche, it's a solid addition.

features

  • ⚡ Catch-up library with full series: Unlike All 4, which often rotates episodes out quickly, ITVX keeps entire box sets available for months. I binged a whole drama season without any missing episodes, which felt rare for a free streaming app.
  • 🎥 Live TV streaming built in: Most services like Disney+ don't do live channels at all, but ITVX streams actual ITV broadcasts. I used it to watch a football match while out, and it synced perfectly with the live feed, no delay.
  • 📱 Download for offline viewing: This is a standout feature for commuters. On BBC iPlayer, you can only download certain shows, but ITVX lets you grab anything from the free tier and watch it on the Tube later. I saved three episodes of a drama for a long train ride.

pros

  • 👍 No registration wall for free content: Many apps like Channel 4's All 4 make you create an account just to browse, but ITVX lets you start watching immediately as a guest. I clicked a show and it played without any sign-up hassle.
  • 👍 Sleeker interface than older rivals: Compared to UKTV Play, ITVX's design feels more like Netflix with smooth scrolling and clean categories. The thumbnails are high-res, and the layout didn't lag on my old phone, which was a pleasant surprise.
  • 👍 Consistent streaming quality even on free tier: Some free services like Pluto TV drop to blurry 480p, but ITVX kept a stable 720p for most shows. I watched a documentary with no buffering, which is rare for an ad-supported app.

cons

  • 👎 Aggressive ad frequency in free mode: On All 4, ads are spaced out, but ITVX overloads you with breaks. A 45-minute show had six ad segments, each with two or three commercials, which made me want to throw the phone.
  • 👎 Search function is hidden and slow: Unlike BBC iPlayer's prominent search bar, ITVX hides it behind a small icon. When I finally found it, typing a show name took seconds to respond, and the results were jumbled with random clips.
  • 👎 No 4K streaming option: Competitors like Netflix offer 4K HDR, but ITVX tops out at 1080p even for premium subscribers. For a new 2022 app, this felt outdated, especially on a big TV screen at home.
  • 👎 Limited international content: If you compare it to Amazon Prime, ITVX is very UK-focused with mostly British shows. I searched for American classics like The Office, and nothing came up, so it's useless if you want global variety.
