Calorie Control & Diet Tracker, a health and fitness app from Willson Studio, is the kind of tool you end up with on your phone when you're tired of guessing whether that lunch was actually as healthy as it felt. Over the years, I've cycled through dozens of these trackers, downloading them from Google Play and the App Store with a mix of hope and skepticism. The install is quick, and the free download gets you started without any upfront commitment, which is honestly the only reason I gave it a shot. After the initial launch, the app asks you to set up a basic profile, but it doesn't bombard you with a forced registration or a lengthy tutorial. The first impression is surprisingly clean, a simple dashboard that shows your calorie budget for the day. There's no aggressive ad pop-up during setup, though I did notice a some banner ads later on, which is expected for a free tool of this kind. There are in-app purchases for the premium tier, but they are tucked away, not shoved in your face, which made me feel like I was in control of my own experience from the very beginning.
The real test for any tracker is how it handles the daily grind, and this one does a solid job. On a typical weekday, I open it right after breakfast, and the process is straightforward. The food database is surprisingly deep, with barcode scanning that actually works on most packaged items. For homemade meals, the custom recipe function saves time, as I can input the ingredients once and reuse them. I found the interface to be intuitive enough that I didn't need to consult a help section; adding water, logging a snack, or checking my macros takes only a few taps. One slight hiccup is that the search function can be a bit literal, so typing 'chicken salad' might not pull up exactly what you think, but you can adjust portion sizes with a slider, which is a lifesaver. The step counter syncs well with my phone's built-in sensor, and the weekly progress graph is both motivating and clear. The app also sends a gentle reminder if you haven't logged a meal by evening, which has saved me from forgetting my afternoon snack more times than I'd like to admit.
After using it for a few weeks, I can say this app occupies a nice middle ground. It does not have the social community aspects of MyFitnessPal, nor the aggressive coaching style you find in Noom. Instead, it feels like a quiet, reliable notebook that tracks your habits without judging you. Someone who just wants to maintain their weight or casually cut a few pounds will probably love its simplicity and the lack of social pressure. However, if you are a strict macro counter who needs detailed micronutrient breakdowns or advanced data export, you will likely find it limiting. The free version is perfectly usable, which is rare, but the ads can get a bit repetitive during the day. I have kept it installed because it does not drain my battery, and the daily streak feature nudges me in a positive way. I suspect I'll stick with this one for a while, especially since it does not feel like a second job to keep the log up to date.
features
- 🔥 The standout feature is the offline mode for logging. Unlike many top competitors like Lifesum, which sometimes require a stable connection to load your 'favorites,' this app allows you to save custom meals and access them instantly. I was able to log my lunch in a subway tunnel with zero reception, and the entries synchronized perfectly when I got back online.
- 📊 The visual data representation is far more digestible than what you get in MyFitnessPal. Instead of a cluttered spreadsheet, the app uses a "ring" system to show your protein, carbs, and fat intake at a glance. This makes it much easier to see if you need to add a protein source to your dinner without having to interpret confusing color-coded bars.
- ⚡ The recipe importer is a gem. You can copy a URL from any popular cooking website, and the app parses the ingredients list and creates a nutrition estimate. It is not always 100% accurate, but it is close enough for daily tracking and saves me a good five minutes of manual entry each evening compared to using the 'create recipe' function in Lose It!
pros
- 💧 The water tracking is integrated directly into the home screen, which is a small but meaningful advantage over generic trackers. You do not have to navigate to a separate log; a quick tap on a glass icon logs your intake immediately. This keeps the habit loop unbroken, making it easier to hit your daily hydration goals.
- 🎯 It is incredibly lightweight on system resources. While some apps become sluggish after a week of data, this one remains snappy even with months of entries. It opens in under a second on my older phone, which is more than I can say for the bloated interface of FatSecret.
- ↔️ The flexibility in calorie budget is outstanding. If you exercise, you can choose to have the app 'eat back' some of your exercise calories, or you can toggle this off. This level of control is usually only found in paid versions of competitor apps, so having it free here is a win.
cons
- 📵 The ad frequency in the free tier is a bit higher than acceptable after you log a meal. A full-screen interstitial ad appears almost every single time you hit 'save,' which disrupts the flow. It feels like a nuisance compared to the static banners you see on the free tier of Cronometer.
- 🤷 The exercise database is very basic. It lacks the specific classes and activities found in other apps. I could not find 'Yoga Vinyasa' and had to settle for the generic 'Yoga' option, which means the calorie burn estimate is likely off, making the daily budget less precise than it could be.
- 🔋 There is a significant lack of integration with third-party wearables beyond the basic Google Fit sync. It does not properly connect with the advanced sleep or heart rate data, meaning if you rely on a dedicated fitness watch for your daily activity, you will have to double-log your stats here, which is tedious.
