Ugly Camera is one of those quirky apps you download on a whim from Google Play or the App Store, entirely free, and it basically lets you take hilariously distorted selfies and photos. It's a novelty camera app, not meant for serious photography. The first time you open it, the interface hits you with this chaotic, colorful design that feels more like a toy than a tool. There's no sign-up, no nagging ads to start, just a big live preview of your face already warped into something hilarious. You can tell right away, this app isn't pretending to be anything other than a quick laugh.

Using it is straightforward, but the controls could use a little patience. You get a slider to adjust the intensity of whatever distortion you choose from the bottom bar, things like bulging eyes, a stretched jaw, or a tiny head on a huge body. The camera viewfinder updates in real time, which is great because you can see the goofiness immediately. But the layout feels a bit cramped on smaller screens, and I accidentally hit the flip camera button a few times. The gallery for saved photos is pretty basic, and exporting a pic to share on WhatsApp or Instagram is just a couple of taps. Honestly, the most fun comes from trying different expressions before you press the shutter, and the best tip I can give is to use a plain background so the distortion stands out more.

After a few days of playing around, I think Ugly Camera works best for people who love sending silly memes or prank photos to friends. It's perfect for a party or a boring afternoon. But if you need a camera for anything serious, this isn't it. Compared to something like Snapchat, which has its own lenses, Ugly Camera feels more limited because it focuses only on the wildest distortions, no filters or stickers. Its standout difference is the simplicity, you don't need to hunt for effects. Still, the novelty wears off fast, and I can see someone uninstalling it after a week, unless they frequently need a quick joke tool. I kept it because it's small and occasionally useful for a laugh.

features

  • 😜 Real-time distortion preview: Unlike many apps that force you to apply an effect after taking a photo, Ugly Camera shows the warped face live in the viewfinder. This makes it way more interactive and fun compared to something like FaceApp, where you snap first and distort later.
  • 😜 Pushable face controls: You can literally push and drag parts of your face on the screen to create custom contortions. It feels like playing with digital clay, which is a feature you won't find in standard portrait editors like Retrica.
  • 😜 No account wall: The app doesn't require any login or email signup, unlike many camera apps that push for registration. You just install, open, and start making funny faces right away, which is a huge plus for casual use.
  • 😜 Zero ad hassle: While there are ads, they're pretty unintrusive, usually banners or a short video after saving. Compared to apps like Funny Face Camera that pop up ads between every effect change, Ugly Camera feels much smoother to navigate.

pros

  • 😊 Simple to grasp: You don't need a tutorial or any editing skills, just open and distort. Snapchat's face lenses require a bit more navigation to find, but Ugly Camera puts the effects front and center.
  • 😊 Generous free package: The whole thing is free without a paywall for effects. Apps like BeautyPlus lock many distortion modes behind a subscription, which isn't the case here.
  • 😊 Lightweight install: The app takes up very little space on your phone, unlike full-featured editors like PicsArt that eat up hundreds of megabytes. This is great if your storage is tight.

cons

  • 😞 Limited effect variety: The number of distortion options is pretty small, maybe around 10. Snapchat has hundreds of lenses constantly updated, so you'll get bored faster with Ugly Camera.
  • 😞 No sticker or text overlay: You can't add captions, emojis, or frames inside the app. In comparison, apps like LINE Camera let you create a complete funny meme in one go.
  • 😞 Low-resolution output: The saved photos look a bit pixelated, especially on modern phones. Apps like YouCam Perfect retain higher detail, so Ugly Camera feels like a downgrade for quality.
  • 😞 Occasional UI lag: On older phones, the real-time preview can stutter, making it hard to snap the perfect silly moment. Similar quick apps like Foodie run much smoother.
