DeepArtEffects is a photo editing app that uses artificial intelligence to transform your regular pictures into artwork. It belongs to the AI filter and style transfer category, much like a handful of other apps out there. You mainly use it to turn a photo you took on your phone into something that looks like it was painted by a famous artist, and the results can be surprisingly good. I came across it on the Google Play Store while looking for something a bit different from the usual beauty filters. The description made it sound like a more serious art tool, so I downloaded it. The app itself is free to download, but like most in this space, it has in-app purchases and shows ads unless you pay. When I first launched it, the interface felt a bit cluttered compared to something like Prisma. There were a lot of options right on the main screen, which made it slightly overwhelming, but it also hinted at the depth of control you might have.
The hands-on experience is where DeepArtEffects starts to feel unique. After you pick or take a photo, you are taken to a screen full of thumbnail previews of different art styles. This is the core of the app. You scroll through them, and each one gives you a quick preview of how your photo will look. The processing speed is decent, but it is not instant. You usually wait a few seconds for the full render. I found myself tapping on styles that looked like Van Gogh or Monet, and the app actually does a solid job of mimicking the brush strokes and color palettes. One thing that stood out is the option to adjust the effect intensity. You can slide a bar to make the art style stronger or weaker, which helps if you want to keep the original photo recognizable. A small tip: if you choose a busy photo with lots of details, the effects tend to look more chaotic. Simple portraits or landscapes work best. The app also has basic editing tools for cropping and brightness, but the main draw is clearly the style transfer engine.
After using it for a couple of weeks, I can say it is a fun app for casual experimentation, but it has some flaws. People who enjoy digital art or want to create unique social media profile pictures will probably like it. It feels different from apps like Picsart or Snapseed because it focuses entirely on artistic transformation rather than general photo correction. What makes it stand out is the sheer variety of styles available, but that also makes the interface feel crowded. I kept the app installed because every once in a while I take a photo that looks great with one of its filters, and I like the fine-tuning options. On the other hand, I could see someone uninstalling it if they get tired of the ads or find the free version too limited. Compared to Artisto or Dreamscope, DeepArtEffects feels more polished in terms of the final output, but less intuitive to navigate. It is not a must-have, but it is a nice tool to have in your editing folder for those moments when you want something artsy.
features
- 🎨 Style variety is significantly broader than something like Prisma. While Prisma focuses on a curated set of well-known artistic filters, DeepArtEffects gives you hundreds of options, including obscure ones that mimic specific painters and art movements. This makes it more suited for users who want to explore rather than just apply a single look.
- ⚙️ Fine control over the output is a big plus. You can adjust the effect strength edge to edge, which is something apps like YouCam Perfect or Artisto do not offer at this level. This slider helps you strike a balance between preserving the original photo and having a strong artistic feel, giving you a more custom result.
- 🎭 Portrait mode optimization is handled better here than in many competitors. When you choose a style, the app identifies faces and tries to leave skin tones more natural while heavily applying the effect to the background. This is a thoughtful touch that apps like Dreamscope often miss, leading to unnatural face textures.
pros
- 🆓 The app is free to download, so you can try out the core styles without paying, unlike FaceApp where many good filters are locked behind a subscription. You get a genuine feel for the app before committing.
- 🖼️ The export quality is high. Even the free version lets you save images in relatively high resolution without visible watermarks if you watch an ad, which is more generous than apps like Picsart that nag you constantly.
- 🔍 Unique style search function lets you sort by artist or mood, making it easier to find what you want. This is not something you see in standard editors like Snapseed, and it helps when you are overwhelmed by choices.
cons
- 📢 Ads are frequent and intrusive. Every few edits, you get a full-screen video, and it becomes annoying quickly. In comparison, Prisma is much quieter with its ads, and you can use it longer without interruption.
- 🐢 Processing speed is slow for high-resolution images. If you pick a 12MP photo, expect to wait 15-20 seconds per style preview. Apps like Artisto are noticeably faster because they use a lighter processing model.
- 📱 Interface feels outdated and cluttered. The home screen is packed with icons and text, making it harder to find the basic editing tools. Apps like Lightroom or VSCO have a much cleaner layout that is easier to navigate.
- 💾 No batch editing option is available. If you want to apply the same style to multiple photos, you have to do them one by one. This is a feature that many competing filter apps have started including, and its absence here feels like a missed convenience.
