EyeEm is a photography app that doubles as a stock photo marketplace, putting it in a unique spot between Instagram and Shutterstock. You can snap pictures, apply filters, and then actually sell your shots to brands and publishers through their built-in licensing system. I first heard about it from a friend who was tired of seeing his photos just sit on his phone, so I downloaded it from Google Play to give it a shot. After launch, you land on a clean feed that looks familiar if you've used any photo-sharing app, but the real surprise comes when you notice that every photo you upload has a chance to earn money. The app itself is free to download and install, though they do take a cut from any sales you make.
The interface is pretty straightforward once you get past the setup. You sign up, link your social accounts if you want, and then start uploading photos from your camera roll. The editing tools are decent but nothing groundbreaking - think basic adjustments like brightness, contrast, and a handful of filters that feel a bit dated compared to what's on Lightroom Mobile. The main action is tagging your photos with keywords, because that's how potential buyers find them on their end. I spent an afternoon uploading about 20 shots from a recent trip, adding tags like "street photography" and "urban landscape," and the whole process felt smooth enough. The confusing part is that there's no clear feedback loop - you upload a photo, and then it just sits there waiting to be discovered, which can feel a bit like shouting into the void.
After using EyeEm for a couple of weeks, I can see why it appeals to certain people. If you already take a lot of decent photos and want a passive way to maybe make a few bucks, it's worth keeping around. But if you're a serious photographer expecting consistent sales, you'll probably find it frustrating because the marketplace is crowded and the payout isn't huge unless you get lucky. Compared to something like 500px or even Foap, EyeEm feels more like a lottery than a reliable income stream - the quality of your photos matters less than timing and subject matter. I kept it installed because I like the idea of my travel shots earning me a coffee now and then, but I could see someone uninstalling it if they want more control over pricing or faster results.
features
- 🛒 EyeEm's standout feature is its built-in licensing system, which lets you sell photos directly from the app without needing to upload to a separate stock site. Unlike Instagram, where your photos just get likes, EyeEm turns your gallery into a potential income source.
- 📸 The app includes a missions section where brands post specific photo requests - think "we need shots of people working from home" - and you can submit directly. This is something neither VSCO nor Snapseed offers, making it more action-oriented than just editing.
- 🏆 EyeEm has an active community and editorial curation that can push your photos to a wider audience. Unlike Shutterstock, where you submit and wait, EyeEm gives your work a chance to be featured, which builds engagement.
- 🔍 The search and discovery algorithm prioritizes well-tagged photos, meaning if you nail your keywords, your work gets seen more often. This beats the random feed of Flickr, where discovery feels less structured.
pros
- 👍 EyeEm is incredibly easy to start with - no complex contracts or payout thresholds upfront, unlike Shutterstock or Adobe Stock, which require minimum earnings before you can withdraw.
- 👍 The app handles all the legal side of licensing automatically, so you don't need to draft agreements or worry about copyright issues yourself, which is a huge win over selling prints through a personal site.
- 👍 It's free to upload as many photos as you want, while platforms like 500px require a paid subscription for unlimited uploads or selling features.
- 👍 The mobile-first design means you can manage your portfolio from your phone, unlike Getty Images, which still feels stuck in a desktop-only workflow.
cons
- 👎 EyeEm's payout is low compared to dedicated stock sites - you get a slice of the sale, while Shutterstock offers higher royalties per download for exclusive contributors.
- 👎 The editing tools are basic and lag behind apps like Lightroom Mobile, so you'll likely need to edit elsewhere before uploading if you want professional results.
- 👎 There's no direct way to set your own pricing, unlike platforms like Foap or your own print shop, leaving you at the mercy of the platform's pricing model.
- 👎 The app can feel slow and buggy with large uploads, especially if you're uploading dozens of photos at once, which is smoother on desktop-focused stock sites.
